Auto Ecu question
As some know i have a 99 forester with a JDM EJ20k in it. problem is it will not pass inspection here in lovely NY and better yet, i recently took a look at the wiring harness and its a frickin rats ness. motor runs beautifully, its completely functional but i cant legally drive it the way it is. so i bought a 98 automatic forester parts car that runs well but the body has seen better days.
i was planning on taking the stock motor/ecu/wiring out of the parts car and mating it to the 5-speed thats already in there. would this be possible since it is an automatic ecu? i figured swapping the wiring over would be easier than trying to make sense of the rats ness i would have to deal with. i was told on another site that i would have to bypass a couple sensors but it should work otherwise. any help would be greatly appreciated. edit: i would have to do this every year until i find another alternative. this car is fun as hell to drive the way it is and i would only be running the stock motor for the winter months and inspection.

Sounds like a PITA to swap the engine every time you have to pass inspection... I would just take the time to redo the wiring for the EJ20K. Just my .02 though. Just get the proper pinouts and go from there. You would have to remove the entire interior including dash every time you perform this swap. Just do it right once and never think about it again.

if i had proper pinouts for the ej20k ecu i would have had my boss do it. wiring is something im not a big fan of doing. i took it to him to look at and see if there was anything he could do and i gave him the pinouts i could find on here and he said he needed one specifically for the ecu before he would be able to do it.
but it is more than that, the ECU will not communicate with the OBD II scanners because it is a JDM ecu. therefore i cannot get it inspected here in NY. i explored swapping the ecu/wiring harness over to that from a 2002 WRX but was told that i would need to swap over the IM and cam sensors which were not interchangabele |

Typically the ECU isn't specific to auto or manual. On the '99 Impreza, for all but the 2200cc California emission engine, you set pin B135-25 to ground or +5V to tell it if its an auto. I didn't see the input on the 2200cc California ECU. Other than that, it want to know if the tranny is in neutral.
I'm not sure if your engine bay pinouts are 100% the same, but it should work. Sounds like a lot of work. |
