Whats the trick of sticking the center diff back on the tranny?
I have no problems with the main tranny, but damn the center diff always kicks my ass.
I got it on and "installed" twice, but it felt like the shifter fork wasnt 100% ....But at the same time, it couldnt NOT be in the right place? I had it installed 2-3 times tonight but since I wasnt 100% sure, I yanked it everytime. Damn I hate this part.

What part(s) did you remove? Just the rear cover or the whole center section?

The entire tranny was torn down... Well, I removed the rear diff, and then opened up the tranny.... I didnt do squat to the rear diff, you don't have to to remove it, but its a pain in the ass to get back on...

Alright, I think I know what your saying.
You have the two case halves together and now you can't seem to get the rest stacked on. Stand it up on a couple 2X4's or whatever you've got so that the input shaft is'nt touching the ground. Put the tranny in neutral. All three of the shift fork ends should match up. Check the end bearing on the main shaft. It has a ring that goes almost all the way around it. The gap in the ring is for clearance. This gap should go towards the driven shafts' end bearing flange. Tap the end of the main shaft with a dead blow to butt the bearing up against the case. You should have a "c" shaped piece of metal with either a 1 or 2 on it. it's smooth on one side and has a couple machined steps on the other. These machined steps Sit on the main shaft bearing. The piece goes between the case and 5th gear. Set it in there. Place your gasket on Here's the tricky part. It's not that difficult once you get the hang of it. Hold the empty center section and put the shift arm rod in it partially. Let it slide out partially so you have some room to work with the shift arm and the slot in the shift forks. Place the end of the shift arm in the slots of the end of the shift arms. Slowly press the center section down. While your doing this the shift arm will protrude out the end as it should be. You see that tab on the bottom? That goes into the slot in the reverse check plate that is in the center section. The reverse check plate is what centers the shifter while your shifting. It has springs in it. Wiggle the center section around until you feel it fall in the slot. You can sort of see it here. Once you get that it should look like this. Bolt it down and torque the bolts to 19 ft lbs. Now drop in the center diff. Like this Put the shim on it. Then drop in the transfer driven shaft: Next is the rear cover. Add your sealant if it's a wrx, gasket if it's an rs. turn the output shaft with a needle nose if it does'nt drop down. Start the bolts and torque to 29 ft lbs. The rest should be cake. Good luck |

Its back on.
Whats was kicking my ass was the fact that the reverse gear is spring PRE-loaded, meaning its hard to turn into.... I kept thinking that I coulding get it into reverse, therefore I didnt want to bolt it back together. Well.... today, and sober, I realized this, and bingo, its all back and ready to install..... |

Alright, I just did another WRX tranny teardown and reassembly.
You CAN reinstall the center diff completely assembled. You put the gears into nuetral. Install the shift arm into the shift arms. It will stay in place if you do it carefully. Now here is my trick. unbolt the reverse spring thingy on the side of the center diff housing. Also take out the bolt that holds a small spring into a detent there. Its a 12mm bolt I think. The round spring thing then can move around abit to accomadate the tab on the shift arm. Now lower the center diff onto the shift arm. As soon as it pokes through, grab the shift arm and CAREFULLY wiggle it into the reverse spring slot as you lower the diff. You will also have to spin the gears (I stick two pins into the drive axles stubs) to align the splines. Now the diff should slide down with a satifiying click. If it hangs up about 1/4" above the tranny, the reverse tab is not in place. It may take a few attemps, but it works! After its all bolted down, then install the two bolts that hold the reverse spring in, and the detent spring and bolt. Check to see if it shifts ok. Note that this is for WRX tranny. With NA trannies, and turbo trannies of older vintage, there is no reverse tab, but it still helps to loosen the reverse spring bolts. |
