Toluene.

I'm on my phone so I can't use an octane calculator....what is the increase in octane for 1 gallon of e85?

From an octane rating standpoint e85 tests at 94-96. But realistically it performs close to c16. Not sure how close.

Final octane with 1 gallon of 96 octane (E85) to 14 gallons of 91 should be 91.35?

1 gallon e85 in 14 gallons 91, results in 91.9 oct.

Torco does work but really coats up the motor with crap. I have seen half a dozen motors torn down and all that MTBE crap coating all over the pistons and valves. Huge clumps on the valve stems. Ever pulled plugs after torco? They look Rusty red...

Tolulene works very well. Never seen any coating or clogging like MTBE addatives. I ran it for years. A gallon or two at fillup.

We used to get it at a local paint supply house. 12 gallons at a time. Used to be cheap, Not sure what it costs now. Get pure tolulene and make sure not to get some product with other agents.

The big drawback now is that if you walk into a paint supply house or home depot and attempt to buy 10 gallons of tolulene, you will likely be told NO, or the cops might be waiting for you in the parking lot. Its used to make Methamphetamine and they will assume, that is what you are up too. Its illegal to pour into your gas tank so that wont be a good excuse either...

They photo copied my license the last time I got two gallons of it. I have not bothered since. Your state/city might be different.

E85 is best used consistently, since you won't have to worry about whether the long term fueling trims are in the right place or not. When used periodically, you can have issues. Not only the fueling trims, but if your timing is getting retarded on 91, everytime you move back to 91 from an E85 mix, you're subjecting the engine to re-learning the knock threshold by knocking and pulling timing. re-setting the ECU each time you change your mix might be a better option.

It can be used as an octane booster, but since it changes the fueling, you have to be careful using it that way. You can't just fill a tank 20% E85 and take off, you need to give time for the ECU to adjust it's long term fuel trims, and you need to be careful in how you go back to 91.

A stock tune has the fueling system headroom for an E85 mix, and it won't cause any problems up to the point you get a CEL... provided you take caution to avoid the issues I just discussed.

You can also use an E85 mix to help pass inspection. I ran 2 tanks of ~20% mix through my wife's 230k mile Corolla. It made the cat inefficiency CEL go away and I got it smogged so I don't have to worry about that for another couple years (if it's still running then.)

I don't think we can easily get Toluene here in Oklahoma...and it seems that the current prices of Toluene and Xylene don't make them that cost effective anymore.

I have considered Torco. It seems to work very well, but I am concerned about the long term effects/deposits it leaves. If I am just going to the track, then I will go with the Torco or a similar product...or just use race fuel.

Good info here Thanks.

Don't have to worry about vehicle inspections at all here, much less an emissions test.
