KING Bearings ??
What are you guys doing about the King bearings coming in two different styles and not being able to match halves ?
I've spent my time and money twice now trying to get this straight thru IIR who I purchased them from, it seems they just come this way, old style MB5382XP-STDX and new MB5382XPG. Heck I even ate the first mistake and kept the sets and reordered just to get the same sets again. I know for a fact they, IIR called the REP for King so we'd get this straight but no such luck, makes me think this is what they have, old style and new style so you can not match standard bearing half with a under size half ? While I ws waiting on this set I went with ACL Race bearings on the last build and all turned out great but this build they wanted King, guess I'll have to stay with ACL until someone tells me where I'm going wrong or where to purchase the correct bearings ? Thanks,

I got my set from MA Performance, I first ordered the MB5382XP's I returned them for the MB5382XPG'S they have them listed as 2 different part numbers. the 2nd time around I got the correct bearings.

http://www.maperformance.com/subaru-...gine-bearings/ Did you have to call to get the other part number? I wonder if it is just because they have extra stock of the first gen ones and are trying to get rid of them. |

I order direct and always ask to have the older style, if they don't have them I use a different bearing.
Haven't been brave enough to guinea pig a new set good luck Dennis. Last edited by Flat 4 Motorsport; 01-23-2013 at 12:11 PM. |

I want to use the newer design though. Don't be a sissy it's not like thousands of dollars ride on the bearings lol.
Edit btw I'm just kidding Last edited by kakarot09; 01-23-2013 at 02:01 PM. |

I bought XPG's as well this time instead of ACL. I won't be doing a teardown at any point in the near future (probably shouldn't have said that out loud...) but I do send oil samples to Blackstone for analysis so I'll know if anything funky is going on with them

Thanks a bunch for everyones help, I can't believe they got this wrong twice, the first time I kind of understood but the second time I was standing in front of the order taker at IIR and listen while he called and explained to them what I needed and they still sent the old and new style sets.
I should listen to Phil and go with ACl Race and be done with King until they get this straight. |

You are 100% correct !!! like I said, while I was waiting on these I built a short block with ACLs and had to use both sets but in the end it came out perfect. Should have stuck with what worked but the guy wanted KIng. |

I enjoyed not having to buy 3 sets of bearings to assemble my motor and get the proper clearances for me it was worth the cost savings.

Not sure how you guys are having issues. If you ordered XP you get old bearings, if you order XPG you get the new style bearings.
Nobody wants to be a guinea pig? LOL, you guys crack me up. Just so you aware, someone has already done all the "guinea pig" work for you. http://vtcar.com/ They are who helped design the new XPG bearings with King. I have personally assembled over 15 engines with the new XPG bearings with no issues. Larry's Auto Machine has used King XPG bearings without issues, and the local shops around me have also made the switch to King. From my experience their tolerances bearing-to-bearing have been much better than ACL. I have yet to grab two random bearing halves of the same stamped size be more than .0002" off from each other. |

^^ Well I'm not sure how I keep getting screwed up with getting the right set's I'm looking for...All I want is a set of main bearings that are standard size for a 2.5 crank and one set that is .001 under sized. I've asked for this till I tried of asking since they keep sending me the old style and new style...MB5382XPG IS ONE SET THEY SENT AND THE OTHER IS MB5382XP STDX...I have two set's of each now.

I just looked through my inventory and it looks like they don't have a XPG STDX yet... I just emailed them to check. I actually haven't purchased a single set of HX bearings in XPG yet or needed too.
I'll let you know what my rep over there says. |

Maperformance added the xpg's to their site now too. That was nice, an email and a couple days later they're there.

I explained to them that it wasnt just a new part number, but there were major differences in bearing design. |

I spent another 134 shipped and was standing in front of the kid who took my order and I heard him tell his supplier what I wanted. My dumb butt stood there and seen the numbers match what I had already and I said something to the young man but he assured me I'll get what I'm looking for, that didn't happen. You know I like the King bearings and it's my fault I'm having to deal with this issue since I talked the guy into wanting Kings in his build. Maybe it's just me but for the most part getting the numbers I'm looking for it takes two sets of bearings, mains and rods. I use one set of standards and one set of extra oil clearance.001...I can get an even number across the journals and pins this way. |

98.9% of the time two sets of bearings are needed.

My king bearings mains and rods were All with in .0005 of each other (maybe less but I had a dial bore gauge).
I was happy to have everything installed and not have to use various different bearing sizes. The ACL's that came out of the motor were all STD sized, the motor however was assembled around 2009 |

I guess it's all in what tolerance you are looking for..I had a build where I used standard set for mains and came out.0007-.0009 across the journals and the motor runs great but again the kid doesn't have a 35r running e85 either. He's rods came out .001 but I've seen .0003 and .0005 to .003 on rod clearances, this is why I've always been one who advocates taking the time to mic a motor instead of just buying a set of bearings and throw them in, it's a 50/50 chance they are taking.
I've seen the same thing with drop in pistons but I don't want to start that debate :-) |

Well not sure if this is going to hurt anything but I'm kind of screwed if I'm to get this short block out the door any time soon.
Journals 1-3-5 with standard King bearings measure .00045 and journals 2 and 4 measure .0015 all standard. So with two styles of Kings new and old can I use them together? So to wrap this up to make sense, journals 1-3-5 have the old style King bearing with .001 extra oil clearance and 2-4 have the new style King bearing standard...So does anyone see an issue with this ? the old style bearings in 1,3,5 yield .0045 or 0.00045 ?
