Lightbulb Upgrading from a Turbo 09 Civic SI sedan...

Hey you guys,

New to the forum since I'm looking to join the subie club haha. I currently have a 2009 Civic Si sedan, Dyno Blue Pearl in color and is turbocharged running mid 200 whp. My little cousin is planning to buy my car and I'm looking to get something more spacious, four door and awd. I'm not gonna lie, the civic was my first turbo car and it is very addicting and not sure if I could go back to n/a. I need advice from you guys, more towards those that had both 2011-2014 wrx and sti. Looking for a fun dd and comfortable for my newborn to have in the backseat.

There's a 2014 sti for 36,000, wrx for 29,000 and wrx premium for 31,000, a used 2012 wrx for 26,000 (8,000 miles) without tax of course.

Is the Rex just as fun and fuel economy as the sti? Because if so I'll just get the Rex but if the sti is a huge difference, might as well spend the extra grands. I was even looking at the evo, but for some reason, the rear of that car isn't my favorite and the shape... But we never know if they give me a good deal haha

I just want opinions especially those that came from a wrx to sti or vice versa. Thanks in advance you guys, I'm planning to switch next month or whenever my cousin gets the cash!

By the way I live in New Jersey with all different weather conditions through the year which geared me toward awd.

Main difference is the suspension is firmer, transmission had DCCD and is beefier to hold more than 400wtq.

Drive both, pick your favorite. Exchange dollarbux.

I came from an 08 si ctsc stage 2 with 320whp and man do I miss that thing. Revving out to 9k Rpms was awesome. But now I have a 2013 wrx limited and I love it. IMHO buying an sti is pointless unless you plan to track the car. I'm guessing you had a greddy turbo kit since u were making such little whp with the civic?

Since you have a child I highly recomend getting a hatch a lot more room which you will need especially as they get older.

Ignore the transmission talk for the most part unless you don't know how to drive a manual.

^ lol

Driven both and prefer the STi. the diff really do make a difference and the WRX really lacks a thick enough rear sway IMO.

I 2nd the drive both comment

Sti will be a much better choice since your buying an pretty expansive car just go all in and get the sti because it has :

-better/stiffer suspensions
-dccd and better gear ratios/6speed
-looks pretty/wild
-more powerful
Overall a better car

I suggest you take a look at our classified sections you can find very well built sti's for less than what you found !

WRX is more than capable for most people. If you are keeping it stock the WRX is faster. It's really going to make a difference getting a STI if you track it or want to make some serious power.

also forgot to point out the WRX's brakes are garbage. Cheap upgrades are out there but the STI > WRX by far.

I wouldn't really say it's more powerful. Maybe on factory listed specifications but both cars actually put down pretty much the same power on the dyno and being the WRX is a little lighter than the STI and 5speed its quicker 0-60-1/4, if those were to matter.

I would test both and really look into what your plans are in the future because that will help you determine what you really need as a base platform. I think the WRX makes a better DD/commuter. STI is a better DD/track car and great foundation to build on for bigger power down the road. Plus it's got more bragging rights.

Save the money and go for the Wrx. Get an accessport and go stage 1, you'll be set. When I bought last year, the upgrades in the sti weren't worth it to me for a DD. I have fun everytime I drive my Wrx even if it's just cruising at 65 on the highway. Went stage 1 last week and it's almost like a new car. I didn't think it could get any better than it was but I was pleasantly surprised.

At least get the SPT exhaust for dat purr...

Insurance was much higher for a sti when I first called insurance before I bought my wrx. I opted to get a wrx limited with the performance package . It was only a little cheaper than base sti , but I got full leather, and sunroof and 11 different spt options

The good ole Sti vs WRX question. The only real advantage of the Sti over the WRX is as mentioned here, suspension, brakes, 6 speed and some fancy doodads in the cockpit. I hauled my new born, now 2 year old, in the WRX with no issue. Just don't try to put your 6'+ tall buddy in the passenger seat with the little one back there. Someone will be cramped for leg room.

I could have got the Sti but saw no reason to spend an extra 10-12K for what was offered. I have been extremely happy with my WRX and really enjoy it. I've done a few autocross events here and can say that just because you have an Sti, don't expect it to out perform a WRX. I'm no racecar driver but have laid down better times than a few Sti in the same generation ('08-'12).

End of the day its your money and your choice, so purchase what is going to make you happy.

You dont really have to state that its turbo...

OP i would suggest the sti.
At one point or another you will wish you would of gotten the 6 speed or the brembo setup, Or the diff, Or even seats.

So you will fork over all the money for those things at one point.

If you can afford it and make payments and issurance easily enough.
Then do it.

Loved your build over on 8thcivic! I switched from an R18 to my 13' WRX the beginning of this year.. For me I got the WRX over the Sti just because it's my daily driver and I don't plan to track besides maybe a couple auto x's later on after it's modded more so the price difference was not worth it IMO

Good luck with your decision bro

No offense, but you're wrong. The STI brakes won't stop faster than the WRX. The STI brakes simply won't fade as fast, which is for track use or a hard drive on a windy road. The WRX are perfect for daily driving which is what OP is looking for. Let's not forget that tires (contact to the road) are what stops a car. Put those Brembos on a Corolla and they won't make it stop any faster. Wider tires increase ground contact which stops the car faster.

I mostly agree with you.

Wider tires won't increase ground contact patch, only weight and tire pressure can do that. Wider tires change the shape of the contact patch. They would give more latteral traction at the expense of acceleration/deceleration traction. To increase stopping power, tires that stick to the road better is the #1 thing (which I know you're saying) and brake bias changes can help, moving some of the bias to the rear will help to a much lesser degree. Getting brackets to change the rears to a bit more distance from the hub and bigger rotors would do this. Back in my GC8 days, that meant going 4 pots and WRX front rotors and H6 brackets and rotors in the rear.

On insurance in NJ......based on the style of the OPs post, I'm going to guess early to mid 20's. If near the metro area, I'll guess an STi would be $8500 a year. Go onto any of the sites (Progressive comes to mind) and see what they give you as quotes. I used to know a guy in Jersey who had a Corvette. His yearly insurance cost was more than his car was worth.

I love how excessively defensive WRX owners get, oh, and it's always "the WRX is faster to 60."

GTFO with that already; that's like the "value" defense in purchasing knock-off parts, which Nasioc loves.

/vomit.

I hate this place so much.

I had an STi. If I get another Subaru it will be the WRX. They've narrowed the gap greatly between the two. You will never notice the difference in 95% of the driving you will do. The WRX will be the better DD by far.

WRX = more comfortable, very similar power output and overall look
STI = not faster stock to stock but offers a better base to mod from and higher potential without breaking stuff.

Any reason why you're not sticking to Honda? For example, why are you not looking at an Accord or Acura? You can get awd if you want, even SH-AWD in the Acuras (TL, RDX, MDX). There are also a lot of brands out there with awd including Volvo and Audi, both offering similarly speced cars to the WRX/STI route. What about stepping to a RAV4, CRV, CX-5, or Forester XT?

I'm not shying you away from anything here, but when buying a new car you really should be looking at ALL of your options.

Has nothing to do with be defensive. If anything, it seems you are the only one who came in here butthurt. It has more to do with performance VS dollar. If the OP is looking for everything the WRX has than why spend the extra money on the STI. Facts are facts, just because you take them the wrong way doesn't mean people are trying to put down the STi, just merely pointing out the difference and capabilities of both cars.
