Impression after installing USDM STi TMIC...
For those who have gone from stock TMIC to a bigger TMIC, what was your first impression when you took out for a spin? Did you really notice any difference in terms of power gain and slower turbo spool? I wonder what the expected power gain and affected turbo spools are. Is there noticeably difference between WRX TMIC and USDM STi TMIC?
I installed mine and car seems to be a little sluggish compared to before. My car has revised e-map to accomodate a bigger TMIC so it's not really a tuning related issue. Car doesn't feel that fast anymore, especially in 2nd gear. What could be the problem? It has been about a week and 100 miles since the ECU reflash. Is it possible for a car to lose power in 2nd gear while gaining power on other gears? My butt dyno tells me that other gears feel about the same as before.

Your map is most likely made for a bigger tmic that has MUCh different flow characteristics than the STI tmic. The STI tmic isnt really much of an upgrade over the stock 02-05 WRX tmic.
You are probably not mapped correctly for that TMIC and the car is probably detonating as a result. Which would explain the power loss. Now if you had an 06 WRX, there is a good reason to go to the STI tmic, but its still not really THAT much of an upgrade. Your map is probably made for a bar plate TMIC as opposed to the restrictive tube/fin design of the STI tmic. There is over a 2lb difference in the pressure drop. |

I changed out my stock 02 WRX TMIC for one of them U Beaut Big Fat TMIC's from Ebay. Result.....
A little more lag, Butt dyno says sustained acceleration greater and ears say the turbo spin sound is louder. Don't understand why the last point.... |

Davenow,
Will my car perform better with USDM STi TMIC over regular TMIC if I go back to regular stage 2 map? how much of a difference do you think there is between regular TMIC and USDM TMIC maps? according to the tuner that remapped the real time map (for TMIC), BCS duty cycle was turned down a little. When I installed mine on MY04 AP stage 1, I didn't notice any performance difference. I did notice that the factory boost gauge did read more vacuum off throttle than with the stock TMIC. It was ready -.07kPa.

who did the e tune?
why did they decrease bcs dc? there's more to tuning for a bigger ic than this. |

Not sure why they decreased bcs dc.... they said the map was designed for STi TMIC.

The STi tmic really should be used with the matching scoop splitter/skirt.
Forcing the air through the IC by using the proper splitter/skirt makes a(BIG) difference. Someone I know put an STi tmic on his stage2 bugeye wrx, stock scoop and took the splitter out....results were Installed the splitter(and STi scoop) and it was like driving a different car. ....another local used a v7 tmic on his LGT with a big turbo(gt30, IIRC) and made 380whp with it |

Scotty, I just placed an order for USDM STi splitter and shroud (my car already has STi hood scoop). I am not sure if air splitter is the main cause since outside temperature was relatively cold and IC was not warm to touch. I also have Cusco HS...

Based on above data logging, isn't there a sign of knock?

The problem, like I have said a million times, is that while the STI TMIC is larger, it doesnt flow any better. You CAn dissapate a touch more heat, but not enough to make a difference worth spending the money on (unless you have an 06 with that joke of a TMIC).
Much of real gains from a REAL tmic upgrade come from the dramatically decreased intake tract flow restriction. Your turbo has to work WAY less to make the same boost pressure. So not only can your shiny new TMIC dissapate a HELL of a lot more heat than the STI TMIC, but there is LESS HEAT TO BEGIN WITH. You also spool sooner, boost ramps up harder, and you hold more boost to redline. And you can get that for about $500. Or you could spend 250-400 to "dissapate a little bitmore heat" and gain zip. Unless you have the 06 wrx, buying an STI tmic is a waste of money. |

Davenow, do you have links or something to some flow testing on the STi TMIC vs the WRX TMIC?
I find it difficult to swallow that the physically wider endtanks and core of the STi TMIC doesn't present a smaller pressure drop than the WRX TMIC. And the core definitely dissipates a lot more heat since it's got like 50% more area. Also, I think you can gain a lot from knife-edge porting and polishing the inlet y-pipe and and outlet duct of the IC. I did that on mine and It makes me happy inside. The stock ypipe and outlet duct are horrendously square-edged. |

I am also curious about flow test on STi TMIC vs. the WRX TMIC...

I bought an ebay special TMIC and the change was pretty drastic on my car. Car definately pulled harder, but yeah spool time got little worse. However, I do notice that the intercooler stays a lot cooler than stock. Then again, I'm a polish w**re. That could have been part of it too. I'd tell you to go with the TMIC is you're ready for a PITA install. Or, get a used one off the classified. Like a MRT or turboxs.

It's very easy for JDM STi TMIC. For USDM TMIC, it requires some work...
