Wait, what? Who's talking about limiting things to just STI parts?

I forsee many notched bumpers in the future if thats really the only mechanical constraint.

I would be surprised if FFR didnt consider the 6spd in one of their revisions somewhere down the line.

I would be curious to see a poll of how many people who are seriously considering building an 818 would want the option for the 6 speed. Personally I wouldn't and I can't imagine too many people would. It seems like a small window of people who want something more robust than a stock 5 speed, but are not willing to pay for a built 5 speed, but are willing to take the weight penalty, and source a 6 speed from a separate donor when they presumably already have a 5 speed from their donor WRX. My point is that there would've been little benefit to FF from modifying the design to fit a 6 speed. They might have considered it at some point and ran into some other issues, and decided it isn't worth it. Maybe it sucks for some people who just really want a 6 speed, but that can't be too many people. 75lbs is a lot of extra weight in this car for no benefit. A 5 speed with PPG gears would hold up just fine. If you are spending the money to get a high power build anyways, it should be an obvious upgrade.

^^^It's 80 lbs on the nose on my scale, measured three times, repeated. That's about a 5% increase in vehicle weight...to put into GD chassis terms about 150-170 lbs.

Just because I was curious and had my 02 WRX and 04 6-spd trannies sitting around...oh yeah and then my Getrag 6MTL380

Lightly used PPG boxes also seem to pop up from time to time and typically seem to sell for close to or less than that of a full six speed conversion (albiet they sell very quickly...). I'm building a higher horsepower 818 and just managed to snag one such built 5MT .

Here's my ej207 powered 818 initial start up. I am the first FFR custom to use a jdm engine and a factory harness and get it running

Transmission is fixed on the 818R

Quote:
The new 818 scores 1st place in class and 1st overall at NASA's September 28 and 29 Watkins Glen road races. The 818R driven by 2012 Factory Five Challenge Series Champion John George ran a best lap time of 2:02.005 with impressive 1.7 G cornering!

More impressive than the great lap times is that the car was down on power (estimated 300 RWHP) due to heat soak in the turbo intercooler (easy to fix) and an incorrect final drive ratio rendering sixth gear essentially a useless overdrive. With these basic changes made, we're fairly confident that the car as it sits will easily crack the 2 minute mark.

To give you an idea of how FAST this really is in a car that was built for about $24,000, here are some comparison lap times/records at Watkins Glen long course:...

Factory Five 818R: 2:02.005
SCCA American Sedan Class Record, Ford Mustang: 2:08.667
SCCA T2 Class Record, Ford Mustang: 2:04.616
SCCA T1 Class Record, Chevrolet Corvette: 2:01.720
SCCA T1 Class Record, Dodge Viper SRT-10: 2:05.7
SCCA Spec Racer Ford Class Record: 2:13.94
SCCA Spec Miata Class Record: 2:19.998
NASA ST2 Class Record, Chevrolet Corvette - 2:03
NASA TTA Class Record, BMW M3: 2:08.2

How does a race team not know that the interrcooler needs good airflow?

I'm guessing he's referring to

I guess I've been sleeping or something. This is the first I have heard of a rwd conversion for the 6 speed. I have had a rwd suby conversion a long time. I can't see a use for a 6th gear in a car this light though unless it's purely for the flats. Bremar in austrailia was the first place I saw a rwd suby tranny and that was a long time ago. I decided a long time ago some people can tear just about anything up if they try hard enough. As for the suby 6spd. My son's 04 sti has been scratching 5th almost since it was new at high rpm's and he is not rough on it so so much for the great suby 6 spd. It could be the suby salesman showed it to too many customers before my son bought it. He gave us a serious test drive but never actually got it in 5th around the dealership while we were trying it out. I have never heard it not scratch at 7k in 5th.

818 would be a FWD conversion, not RWD.

That looks great for an early solution. Any idea how it folds up for storage? I doubt there is anywhere in the car to put it.
