Default 99 Subaru Outback Shifting problem

My sister has a 1999 Outback and the dealership said the Tranny Seals broke and estimated $2500 to repair... when she took it in it was having difficulty shifting. $2500 to replace some seals seems crazy to me, I understand there is labor to drop the tranny but 2.5k?

Any thoughts on Tranny seals or DIYing?

Thanks,

What kind of shift problem is it having?

Mine, now rebuilding it, had a horrible 3-4/4-3 shift flare. It randomly changed which way was severe. Also after driving at sustained high speeds it would act like it was trying to hold it in 3rd and 4th gears at the same time, even in park.

It took about 2-3 hrs for me to drop the trans out of my car. And so far I'm in around $8-900 in parts for a rebuild.

Default My shifting problem solution.

For rebuilding the transmission myself, by the time it was all said and done, I spent close to $1800. Please note that amount includes the following;

Master Overhaul kit, which includes steels. And a filter kit $427.94 , from Transtar Industries Inc. Good fast shipping.*

Valve body mod/upgrade $654.36, From Import Performance Transmissions. Looked great, packaged well, shipped fast, works wonderfully.*

THE TORQUE CONVERTER FOR A 1999 LEGACY OUTBACK is difficult to find through any Do It Yourself Parts store. DON"T BELIEVE AUTOZONE when they tell you "Sure, we have one!" They made it right with me, it just took a while to get it all sorted out. Here is my advice, pull it off the car, count the splines for both the INPUT SHAFT, and the STATOR SHAFT, get your pilot bearing and bolt diameter measurements. If you decide to go to Autozone take these with you. Make absolutely certain they call the 1-800# listed with the part. It says to call it to verify application. Then make sure to talk to the vendor rep, and have them verify the spline counts. IT WILL HAUNT YOU IF YOU DON'T. Just PM me to find out the full story.

FOR THE TORQUE CONVERTER, if you are anywhere near Salt Lake City, Utah call Inter-mountain Transmissions, 1-800-728-0067. They will save you a major headache, and some cash. They will rebuild your torque converter for about $160. At least that is what they quoted me before Autozone made their boo-boo right, and I didn't get to use Inter-mountain.

"Driven gear assembly", associated clutches, and the "C duty solenoid and valve body", this is the transfer/center diff stuff for lack of better description. And a 2000 model year transmission service manual. The 1999 Service manual was no longer available, prior years and years after but not '99. $665. Local Subaru dealer

Lock nut for the front pinion shaft $22.10. Again local Subie dealer. I really would have figured this would be included in the rebuild kit, seeing that you HAVE to take it off to separate the case from the pump housing, and it is staked onto the shaft.

It looks like you can order the lock nut from Transtar if you know to ask for it. But I'm not certain, since I didn't do it.

The "*" after indicates that I found them using a Google search. All were very helpful, not necessarily the most knowledgeable, but helpful. For example, the Transtar guys didn't know if I needed a band or not for my application, so they sold me one just in case, the Phase 2 4EAT does not use one. They also didn't know if their master kit came with the clutch pack for the transfer/center diff, so I ordered one through the dealer, turns out the Transtar kit comes with them. Now I have spare parts!

NONE OF THE COMPANIES LISTED ABOVE PAID ME, OR GAVE ME ANY SORT OF FREE SERVICE/PARTS TO MENTION THEM. I am merely trying to give a guide to what I found to solve my problem, and who I used. And hopefully save some one the headaches that I had to endure. I was without a car for about a month trying to find and gather everything. Hope this helps.

No, the manual was about $45-$50. The rest was a complete clutch pack (steels and frictions) for the transfer clutch, also called the driven/drive gear. The drive gear itself, the bearing, and the shaft it all assembles on. And the transfer clutch solenoid and valve body.
