06 WRX Blouch EVO 3 w/ 8cm vs TD05-18G XT which one?
Experienced responders only please!!
I need constructive input for my next choice in turbos. I am coming from a TD04 19T turbo setup with a stock clutch and appx 72000 miles which has the following additional components: 255 LPH Walboro STI tmic MadDad 2pc catted down pipe and Whisper turbo back APS turbo inlet KS tech 6mm phenolic spacers GS up pipe GS ported manifolds GS cross pipe GS 3port boost contol solenoid. Stock (565cc) injectors I am considering Blouch's TD05-18g XT 8cm and talked to Mike about its specifics: Maximum efficiency was quoted to be around 80% Compressor is capable of 42-43 lbm/min Rated for about 330-350 WHP/TQ 20+ lbs boost was recommended as a start to effectively use this turbo. 740cc injectors were STRONGLY recommended Uprated actuator above 22 lbs boost. Comparatively Blouch's previous TD05-18g 8cm had a 40lb wheel, could use either 650 or 740 cc injectors and was (from what I've read here) a turbo which matched very well with the 2.5L engine. Unfortunately it is no longer available from Blouch. Here in lies the connundrum- I am shooting for a suitable daily driving turbo that will not cost me too many supporting mods like a transmission, but is well matched to the 2.5L motor...obviously something that is missing with my original choice of the 19T. The "magic number that seems safely doable on the 2.5L engine is around 300 HP and 300 and can be definitely had with the XT as mentioned above. However, Mike suggested I go with an EVO3- 16g 8cm. for a DD turbo because it would be easier on the transmission. I am a reasonable driver, and do not do whole shots or stop light drag race. Donughts in a snow covered parking lot yes... Which one will be the best matched to the 2.5L engine for daily driving (read highway and town/city combined) so that I have a nice even power band, and respectable MPG. I thought the upfront torque of the 19T upgrade would be great, but I seem to be in boost all the time and have lower mpg because of it as well as the HP characteristics of the TD04 despite the extra work put into it. I can deal with needing an uprated clutch but am hoping to do this next year. I'd like to drive the car during the good weather with what it already has to get used to the new power characteristics. For either turbo I'd get the additional supporting mods: Process West intercooler Properly sized injectors Please give me your input on each turbo choice and let me know if I am missing something important. 16G EvoIII will easily get you to 300 / 300 with proper supporting mods. 18G-XT will get you to the torque limit slightly later and will hold the max HP slightly longer.
I don't think the spool difference between a 16G EvoIII and an 18G is huge. You're talking about a pretty small difference, I'd go 18G-XT on a 2.5L. If you're concerned about the tranny, use the tuning to keep you within your comfortable limits. Nobody is gonna force you to push the turbo to the max. Just make sure the tuner knows what your comfortable limits are. May cost an extra 1/2 hour to hour of tuning for some fine tuning of your boost curve that doesn't happen with all tunes. |

don't waste ur money on those turbos, get a 20g td05 7cm^2, its perfect for daily...well in this case its the same as the 18g xt except the 8cm^2, turbochargers.com has the 20g for $1100 or so
don't worry about this billet wheel stuff...my 20g on my tr spools at 3200rpm and that's good enough. But if you're still not convinced with my opinion go with the 18g xt |

I figured I should chime in here since I made a similar decision in '08. My choices were a EVOIII 8cm or TD05H-18G 8cm. I went with the 18g 8cm and it definitely was the right decision. On a 2.5L it just feels right and the car almost feels like it is NA.
My tuner/engine builder told me this and the dude at Blouch said basically the same thing...go a little bigger than you need. EVOIII will get you there but an 18G will give you room to grow (just start off running a bit less boost). IMHO get the 18G XT 8cm. Last edited by csmithwrx'05; 05-12-2010 at 09:38 PM. |

A few other questions regarding the choice between these turbos:
Regarding AFRs and MPG, I have seen that the larger turbos such as the TD05 variants have a leaner AFR prior to boost onset. Will staying in this RPM area help me maintain some economy? My 19T tune maintains essentially 11.0 AFR across the board. What kind of MPG do you get on average with either of these turbos? What size injectors are you using and what are their duty cycles? Also, how many of you are still using the stock transmission? What clutch is being used and how many times has it been replaced at this power level? I have read Unabomber's Clutch guide but want to know roughly how long I have before it needs replacing. I'll post more questions as I think of them. Thanks in advance. Kon |

I agree! you need a tranny first, I broke my tranny with a VF39 on E85.

Just want to point this out that I am running an HTA68 and right now with stock injectors and an STi tmic I am putting down 292/311. When my injectors are put in Ill have a little bit more of an aggressive tune to get me that 300whp mark, and my baby is at 86k, I dont drag or track and I expect my suby to give me alot more miles...
In my eyes, 300whp is probably the limit of reliability of the internals on our WRX's, anything more and you enter the gray area. I ran this setup with the sti top mount for awhile, now Im running a txs fm, injectors done in a couple of weeks, my tuner says 300whp is gravy with the HTA68 and the spool on it is super fast, and the turbo itself is not very spendy... |
