pulley stuff...yet again.
well I'm sure most of you read what I put about how I couldn't get the damn underdrive pulley off. Well these are the few things that happened along the way to building up all that frustration.
that's right, the socket broke in 3 places and the breaker bar bent. We also broke the handle off of a torque rench. But that wasn't mine and I gave it back to the owner to exchange it for another one since it's Craftsman and it has a life-time warranty. I really don't want to give up and sell this to someone else, but I might have to if nothing works. ~Eric

Damn, that's not good! I used a deeper socket than that, maybe that would have more structural integrity since the point of contact is further up the cylinder... ? As for cranking that byotch off, I used a regular old Craftsman socket wrench with the 3' handle from my 2 ton jack slipped over it. No problem. I'm sure I don't have to ask it you've blasted it with WD-40 first. Be sure to slap some anti-seize on the bolt before putting it back. I hope this info can help, those pulleys can be nasty. Good luck!

1) Never use a torque wrench to loosen things.
2) Get your wallet out and take it to a shop to have it put on. That way you won't have to worry about belt tensions, proper torque on the reinstall, or breaking more stuff. |

Use a impact wrench socket. They are much, much stronger than the one you show in the picture.
If you need, I live in Oceanside and work in Scripps Ranch. I have a 1" drive socket set. The crankshaft will break before it will. |

hey, I replied to your other thread on this prob.
I'm telling you!, you should go buy a 3/4 in. drive "T" style breaker bar (like the one you bent but bigger) and the right size 3/4" drive socket for it. This WILL WORK!!! If you are too cheap to spend the money on the tools than just return them to the store and get your money back when your done. (= rent-a-tool ) And give the damn PB Blaster a try, that $h*t will amaze you. Also I can tell from the pic that (with the exception of the Craftsman torque wrench you ruined useing it wrong) the tools you show in the pics above are totaly gehto! If you can't find any 3/4 in. drive stuff go for the $26 Craftsman 1/2 in. drive breaker bar (and a socket that doesn't say "Taiwan" on the side of it). The brewaker bar is inexpencive and the last time I saw one of them break it had a 4 ft. pipe on it with someone JUMPING on the other end! enjoy! -Caine HYD Racing |

After we bent that break bar we used a bigger one actually...it must have been a 3/4 inch one 'cause it was pretty damn thick. That one we pulled/pushed on about 10 times with 3 guys and the last time is when we broke the socket.

I used huskey sockets and didnt break anything... tough mo-fo though. needed about 3ft of leverage to get the thing off. FWIW are you *sure* you're unscrewing it the correct direction.

With my engine on the stand yesterday I used a 3/8" ratchet a 3/8-to-1/2" adapter and a short 1/2" drive 6-point Craftsman socket, all with only a 18" extension.
I know it's tough in the car, but a 3-4' extension is the best, plus good quality tools make the difference. I've split sockets installing suspensions, broke ratchets torquing small bolts off... you name it. I LOVE the Craftsman waranty. |
