Not sure right now.

Default know of a 2.5rsT that lasts a long time?

has anybody had really good luck with a turbo on a 2.5rs? i know it has been done before, but longevity seems to be a problem. i know what i need to build it right, and i know about the seperate engine management. im looking to see if someone has done it running more than 3 years at more that 5 psi. im looking for maybe 5 years at 7-12 psi depending on my mood for that day...

if anyone knows anything or even heard of someone whos had it longer, please let me know.

There are people on here who have run nearly 100k miles turbocharged. You won't last long running 7-12 psi for very long. The compression is way too high. The 5 psi would put you faster than a WRX anyway. If you want to keep the 2.5 liters of displacement, and running that kinda boost your 2 options are STi Shortblock, or new pistons and rods to lower the compression.

wont last long running 7-12psi? how long is long? i know a few people that have lasted quite a while, one person i know has probably 30k miles on his setup all above 7psi, probably the last 10k at 11psi and track days are at 14psi all on stock block.

8 psi so far and over 10k boosting.

I have a buddy with an 99 RST and he had his car running at 12 psi for 3 years and one full year at 16 psi....

99s can run 12 psi all day long... no problem.... I wouldn't recommend over that if you want longevity.... it all goes down to how much power you want...

You can do 7 psi no problem...

I ran my car with the large t3/t4 at 12psi for quite a long time on the stock block before it let go, and it let go just while revving
I did track days and 1/4 miles during this time as well.
My friend has a similar setup and his car is still running (ps, he's parting his car and selling the kit btw, custom setup with STi topmount and Tec II ecu/550s etc)

I didn't say it was impossible to run more than 5 PSI, there are very few who run that high and actually get results that last longer than one pull. Theres a reason the FAT and AVO kits only run 6 PSI, and that is for constant reliability. Any higher than that and your gambling the life of your engine. PHATsuby, 30k isn't that long either, thats alittle more than a year with the amount i drive. Not very long at all (unless you can afford a new engine every 30k+ miles)

well, you can still go longer than that, 30k per year is going to be a lot of highway miles I am assuming correct? just because you are going 30k miles in a year doesnt mean you are boosting more than any other average person unless you accelerate as fast as you can every single time to get up to speed.

done CORRECTLY, it will last.

also, the reason AVO and FAT kits only run 6psi is not just for constant reliability, its because they do not want to be held liable for people putting their kits on and blowing their motors because those kits do not come with fuel upgrades that make more than 6psi possible because that would cost more. if those kits came with upgraded pumps and injectors, they could offer a map for easily 9psi that is just as "reliable" as the 6psi one.

just a few thoughts from someone who has turbo'd their own car.

Ben

I just bought the JC sports kit that runs off the VF11 turbo. 92 legacy turbo i believe... anyway, it is way tiny and apparently hits full boost at 2200, but it only runs at like 4.5-5 psi. With proper engine management do you think my engine will last 70k on that setup?? The previous owner had lasted 3 years on the kit without any problems... I guess I am just looking for some encouragement as I was a bit nervous in taking the forced induction plunge...

you can run 6 psi no problem... just get engine management... and get it tuned right.

I believe the 99 motor has a low enough compression to last even up to 9-10 psi when you have enough fuel. I haven't read much about 00+ motor, and certainly I have heard that 03+ motors are weaker. I don't think with enough fuel I would try anything more than 8 on my 00 motor unless someone has done it and still has the original shortblock. Granted, mine wasn't turbo'd for the first 114K KM and I drove quite hard even on the streets

i am boosting 11psi on my 01 stock NA ej25 with no problems, like i said earlier, my friend with the same motor does 11psi also and 14psi on track days and auto-x. it will handle power if you tune it well.

yeah, im preparing for a 1.8 to a 2000 2.5rs with 60K original miles swap, and im getting everything i need together before hand for the turbo. those numbers of 12 psi are looking really hot on a 2.5...especially mostly stock.

thanks again for all info!

i have all those components, my tune is conservative, however it does not need to be, and by conservative i mean low 11's high 10's full boost. my other friend JoeT's car is tuned much better and his afr's are leaner. I am not sure what you mean by very rich though, in comparison to a wrx or sti it is lean. obviously you need proper fueling, hopefully you would not expect me to run 11psi without it or anyone else.

I no longer own the car, but my old '98 RS is still running strong. It was turbocharged in June of 1999 with 6K miles on it and it probably has close to 100K on it now.

I guess with any turbo car, lean = 11s. As long as one can maintain high 10s under higher boost, the 10:1 compression probably doesn't matter if you have the timing right. I just don't feel like touching my shortblock yet so even if I upgraded all the fuel components, I don't feel safe touching 10psi
