engine stumbling and stall
i've got an 03 wrx, stock with 10K miles. the engine will stumble and can't maintain idle after coming to a stop. quickly gunning the engine in neutral doesn't help as the engine starts wildly changing its RPMS as soon as throttle is lifted. this morning, it stalled completely.
any ideas? i'm about to bring it in but its a bit worrisome. fuel filter, air filter...? danka

Could be a dirty idle air control valve. My car was having trouble idling recently much like what you described, although it never actually stalled on me. I cleaned it out with Seafoam and that solved my problem.
If you attempt to DIY, be aware that there is a coolant line running through there, so only remove the valve (which sits on top of the throttle body) when the engine is cold. There is a rubber gasket, part number 22659AA120, that might need to be replaced--I bought a new one just in case. Also, the two screws that secure the valve in place are very soft and were tightened at the factory by the Subaru gorilla, so be careful with them. |
