Heres the deal, I want to clean the rims and I want to make sure I don't clean it with stuff that'll ruin them

^^^^^ ....start there (car soap & water). Agitation is key in helping to break up brake dust/road grime from the wheel surface (using the appropriate tools). I would stay away from the harsh, acidic "spray & rinse" solutions and only use them as a last resort. There are several other wheel cleaners & APC's available that are much safer while still being effective.
Are you just looking for something to use during your normal cleaning routine? ....or have the wheels been neglected for a while and you have already tried some of the methods described? |

....the thing to remember is that you want to use the least aggressive method needed to get the job done. As Scotty pointed out, soap and water is the way to go. ....if needed, step it up from there. You may also want to think about applying wax/sealant to your wheels as well. It helps during cleaning process since contaminants are less likely to stick to them.

I had some stubborn brake dust on my stock wheels that didn't come off with soap & water and some brushing. Much to my surprise, a rag with some WD40 on it took it right off. WD40 washes off easily. I'll never buy that acidic wheel cleaner stuff again.
