Default what would be the difference b/w a 8 and 10 inch sub?

Hi, i have a wrx wagon and im thinking about building a fiberglass enclosure in my spare tire. I want good sound quality, and i dont really blast music, or listen to heavy bass music anymore. Which would be better in my situation? a 8 or 10 inch sub?

what would be some diff b/w these sizes? the 8 inch would be more responsive and punchy, and also not as powerful rite?
If i were to get an 8 inch sub, do u think it would be powerful enough to fill the car? to fill out the bass? thanks alot for any input or suggestions! thanks

also i was thinking bout the image dynamics idq 10 or id 8..since they dont need that much enclosure volume.

also would there by any sound quality difference b/w running a sub at 2 ohms compared to 4 ohms? thanks!

You would not notice a difference when running a sub at 2 or 4 ohms. Sub frequencies are not subject to the extreme distortion of mid and high frequencies. Distortion is almost undetectable on bass notes, which is essentially all that happens when you go to 2 ohms on a speaker, a little more distortion is introduced. Go ahead and run it at 2 ohms for additional power.

As far as your sub, I have always liked 12 inch drivers myself, just for the accuracy and low end extension. I think that saying that an 8 is more 'punchy' than a 10 is a little incorrect. Any 10 inch sub designed for sound quality should sound just as punchy as its 8 inch counterpart. I personally think you should go with the 10 to gain a little bit into the low end frequency extention. An 8 inch driver was not originally considered a subwoofer, rather just a woofer but in recent years is sometimes called a subwoofer. Some companies like Illusion Audio are making a mid-range bass driver in an 8 which covers frequencies above what your subwoofer typically will.

In my experiences, the 10 will not only give you more output than the 8, but lower extention. The IDQ 10 you are mentioning, is one of the highest SQ drivers ever made as well, but don't expect huge output at all.

The sub he used is a very good sounding sub. It is considered one of the best home use subs, and when you throw it in a car it sounds awsome. They came out with the same sub repackaged for car audio packages called the DSQ. Definitely worth checking out.

oh yeah, go with a 10, not question in anyones mind that this is the speaker to go with, when putting it inside the spare tire (space limitations)

do u mean the dayton sub or image dyn? thanks

ruiner: wow thanks for all comprehensive info. u just solved alotta questions that i had about ohms..and subs. i have a cpl questions still though. when u said that a 10 inch would give better sound in the low extensions...than the 8 inch. ..but the specs for the subs give the same frequencies. Does that mean the 10 inch will just be more efficient at the lower freqs because of the bigger driver?

also u said that the idq10 is a good sq sub, but not that high of an output. if u've heard it b4, do u think it would be enough to fill the cabin of a wagon sufficiently, but not overpowering? the idq10 needs 250 watts. i should find a sub that has 250 watts rms at least..and no lower rite? thanks!!

I've got an 8, and my brother's got a 10 in his car. The bigger speaker can reproduce the low notes much better (just like comparing 6.5's to a subwoofer, it's a similar story 8" vs. 10").

His 10" and still does a good job on the mid-bass (like high notes on a bass guitar in a rock band), and it's plenty punchy for stuff like drum beats.

Go with a 10" woofer if you've got the space to build a box with enough volume. The subwoofer manufacturer will recommend a certain size box (for example 1 cubic ft.), try to match that to the size of your enclosure, that plus a quality amp will be of most importance to having good quality sound.

I would go with the dayton. I have heard both subs before, and definetely believe the dayton to be a superior sub with regards to sound quality and bump factor all in one (plus its cheaper!)

For a different thing I went with 2 Bazooka RX-T1s and, IMHO, they sound worlds better than the 2 JL 10"s I was using before. Extremely tight and focused, I'm not a big rap/hip-hop fan so I went sealed and use Lars Ulrichs bass drum in One to tune my subs in for that boot to the gut.
For pics of my install go to the post about false trunk floors (residing presently at the top of the forum)
