Default just ordered some STi heads to go wiith my EJ257 block...what else do I need?

I have been driving my hybrid (ej257 block & 2.0 liter heads) bugeye for about 8 months now. I went this route because my wrx engine broke and I needed to rebuild the 2.0 or just go with a 2.5. I have been concerned with issues relating to the compression and overall of having an engine that wasn't engineered by Subaru. Well I just ordered a set of STi heads and I'm hoping that it will give me piece of mind. What else will I need other than gaskets to make this work? How should I control AVCS?

I have contemplated getting AEM EMS or Hydra if I'm able to sell my AP, wrx heads and a couple of other things I have laying around. I have heard that I can disable AVCS, but I'm not sure that works with my longterm plans. What else will I need or need to do to make sure that I won't blow up another engine and that I will have good factory like power?

Thanks for the help.

Did you order all the parts for the avcs? Even if you don't you avcs, you still need to route to oil for the avcs. I just went through this with a set of cosworth heads on a wrx.

All that I have ordered so far are a complete set of STi heads (complete as in cams, shims, buckets, valves). Can I use the throttle body that I have? Will my PE 650 injectors work?

I take it the heads are used then? Just make sure all parts are there. You can use your 2.0l intake and TB and injectors. The sti have different fuel rails and side feed injectors.

Won't you be re-using your EJ20 cam gears? That will eliminate the AVCS anyway, no?

I'm not sure. I'm trying to piece everything together and I'm on a budget. That budget being as much as my wife will let me get away with. I'm more than a little confused about how to piece it all together. I've heard that someone makes some wiring harnesses for this set up but I haven't been able to locate them yet. Thanks again for all of the help.

The only issue I think you are going to have is going to be with the AVCS.

You need the AVCS solenoids, AVCS hard lines that are on the front of the heads and AVCS cam gears.

Don't have one of these items and AVCS won't work.
Don't have the hardlines and you will burn up the front cam bearing as thats where it gets it's oil...oh and you'll have a rather large oil leak.
Don't have the solenoids and you will have a rather large oil leak.

As for controlling the AVCS, the only way you will be able to do it is with a standalone ECU....Hydra or AEM. The stock WRX ECU can not be flashed to control the AVCS. You will then have to manually wire from the standalone to the AVCS solenoids as you don't have the wiring to run it in your car now.

That is an informative post. Hopefully Tristan at Fred Beans can hook me up with that stuff.

Also, I'm not sure if the cam sensor pickups on the cams are different between the STI and the WRX. If they are, your stock WRX computer is going to have an issue with that. If you go standalone, it won't matter because you can configure the cam sensor for any type of pickup.

When I priced out a set of heads from the dealership, I think the cams are seperate.
