I'm not sure why you think it is sketchy, it isn't a new practice, and it isn't hidden, read your sticker, printed in the large box centered at the bottom of the window sticker under the heading "EPA Fuel Economy Estimates": "Your actual mileage will vary depending on how you drive and maintain your vehicle" It isn't even in small print, the smallest print on the sticker talks about the iPod and Bluetooth trademarks! I wonder what Apple and Bluetooth are up to...

I'm currently reading 33.3 on this tank, same mixed driving as always. Less than 100 miles till empty, and its 5 spd with 2500 miles. The numbers are attainable.

11.7 gallons
26.45 mpg calculated TripA: 309.5 miles 21 mph avg 27.3 mpg avg (less than 1 mpg off this time) TripB: 3429 miles 26 mph avh 28.8 mpg avg Odo: 3550 miles I filled up with Shell 89 this time (87 was 3.49/gal, 87 $3.61 so what the hell right?)and will drive at the speed limit (instead of 5 over all the time) and see what happens. http://www.fuelly.com/driver/hemophilic/impreza You know, I live in a somewhat hilly area and there's traffic all the time. My lifetime fuelly says 26.8. I think the only reason I'm slightly disappointed with the MPG is I came from a 2003 Civic that always got over 30 MPG no matter what. The EPA ratings say the Imp is actually 1 MPG better in the city, 2 better on the highway and combined is 1 MPG better. I was hoping I could get that kind of mileage out of a bigger more comfortable car but the reality is that the '03 Civic is 2-300 lbs lighter. ~27 MPG isn't bad for the kind of driving I do and it's better than my wifes '07 CR-V (my dearest leadfoot can barely manage 20 MPG...). After fillup today, I had to do a drive for work of about 90 miles. Maybe 80 miles of that was 65 mph highway. Trip says 49 mph avg and 35.7 mpg avg. I'm certain my car is doing what it's supposed to do. Also, I like the paddle shifter trick while in 'D' to stop the downhill engine braking. It clicks into 5th or 6th going downhill and then automatically switches back to D at the bottom. |

i hear you on expectations. i think that's what differs for people on this thread. i think i am a bit in the middle: i'm slightly disappointed but not overly so, that the impreza doesn't get any better mileage than my 2000 civic (rated at 27/32 according to the 2008 EP standards)...in fact, so far, it is slightly worse. in recent tanks (before getting the civic in an accident), i think the lowest i would see is high 29s by hand cacluated mileage, but almost always 31-32mpg overall. so far, even correcting for odometer errors of 4%, i'm just around 30. not bad. i'm expecting/hoping that with break-in over the next few thousand miles (i think i'm at around 1600/1700 right now) i'll get myself closer to my old civic's overall mileage. |

my odometer seems to be off about 2.8%, just judging off the mileage markers on the side of the road. next time i drive i might check distance off gps. not worried about it, because it is in my favor, but still a little annoying.

yeah...annoying...helpful though to compare it in the context of the overestimated (in general) dash computer.

yes, a little though because on my Buick my fuel guage has never read even close to correct. and bottomed out/pegged, i still have 5 gallons remaining, but my spedo/odo are dead on accurate.

Most of you guys in this thread are expecting way too much out of this car as far as mpg goes. It's an AWD car it should be compared to a civic or an corolla. It has twice the drivetrain components as a FWD. Ive even read that some of you were thinking it should exceed 36mpg which is dumb to even say. When I buy a new car I expect the only time to get HWY EPA numbers is on vacation on long straight full tanks of gas on interstates. If I can average close to the middle of city and hwy on a weekly basis I'm more then happy. I've been averaging 28-31 hand calculated mpg on a 60/40 split of hwy and city and you will never hear a fowl word from me I came from a V8 CC 4x4 truck getting 14mpg. When you watch commercials just think that the mpg figures they achieve are probably empty cars with a 110lb driver with the a/c off running 55mph with a tail wind behind them, driving on the salt flats and you wont be let down.

I can't attain those numbers. Crazy that folks with the manual transmissions are getting 10mpg more than me with my CVT in mixed driving. I seriously baby this thing and it makes no difference. If I drive hard or I drive with my mind on the eco gauge the car just gets 22.8 no matter what. The only exception for me is my 80/20 highway city trip that got me 27. |

what i'm actually curious about is your Odometer. it seems that the speedometer and odometer don't necessarily have to agree.
i have found my speedometer is pretty close to spot on, but as far as the odometer goes, it doesn't report the right net distance traveled. i've seen it vary by 2-5% (underpredicting) based primarily on googlemaps mapped trips which my old car and other's i've talked with, typically match to within less than 0.5%. |

Bottom line for me is: 1. winter gas is a myth 2. cold or warm temp makes no difference 3. too soon to tell about break in period, I have 7,000 to go before the 10,000 rumored break in period |

There is no way to confirm the dealer actually DID the TSB update. Unless you happen to notice a big difference in driveability. So if you notice NO difference, is it due to the TSB reflash not working, or the dealer just parking it on the back lot overnight and saying they did it? We have an appointment on the 29th to have our car looked at and are insisting on the update, but several local dealers are heavily resisting our request, and the better one is only doing it under protest . How will I know they did it if I see no improvement?? Or they can say it already has it on this January build, but not even check. Not that I don't totally trust stealerships... |

anyone know if this sort of thing would show up on an OSB analyzer? thom: do you have any of the symptoms people have noted like the rapid RPM drop under heavy throttle at 40mph and other things you can test before and after? |

Call SOA they should be able to tell from your VIN if you already have said updates or not.

I had my first fill-up today. The values on the first tank are pretty useless but I'll post anyway.
I picked my car up new with 194 miles on the odo. The gauge indicated a full tank. I forgot to hit the reset right away so I just let it go. I drove till 479 miles were on the trip-odo. The gas gauge read just below 1/4 remaining but low fuel light was not on yet and the dash display showed 27.6 mpg. My driving was all city. My driving yielded 285 miles. I put in 13.590 gallons (2+ gallons after the click off) for a calculated 21.0 mpg. If I figure mpg where the pump first clicked off I would calculate about 25.5 mpg. This is why the first tank is pretty meaningless until I get a pattern going with consistent full fill points. |

84.1 on TripA and 85.8 in google maps...
I think I need to do a different test. The next time I'm on some long highway jaunt with regular mile markers would be best but that's somewhat rare. I guess I HAVE to go to the beach this weekend darn it. |

Got the car with 7 miles on it. MPG reader was set at 15 mpg . . . 200 miles later, it's reading 22.5 mpg and climbing about .5 each to and from work since it's a 90% highway commute. Won't get a better reading until I fill up again and see how many miles I go.

2nd fill up after TSB "update"
Here are the results of my 2nd tank after taking the car in for the TSB "updates" 2 weeks ago.
274.8 miles driven 12.061 gallons 22.78 MPG Trip Computer said 24.0 Avg MPH for this tank was 19mph Tha tank before this one I babied the car, being real good with the eco gauge, nice slow accelerations, coasting to lights as much as possible. Taking my time getting up to speed on the freeway. Last tank I got 22.9. This tank I just let 'er rip. Didn't really pay any attenion. Driving conditions about the same although I had more freeway miles this time. 22.78. |

I have just under 500 miles on my 4 door Limited and am getting great numbers. Most of my driving is rural 2 lane with some short 4 lane interstate. I got 30 on my first fill and 33 on the second. The improvement could be break in, or it could be the Dealer didn't fill the tank completely before delivery. I live in the mountains of PA so I'm not driving on level roads. I'm not an aggressive Driver but I drive a little on the fast side. I sincerely believe the car will attain the advertised numbers on the highway. City driving is another matter because not all city's are created equal. I can see where mileage would really suffer if I was driving in constant stop and go traffic. If you check the Fuely website you will see numbers all over the lot. I believe they are a reflection of traffic and driving habits of the owners. The car is amazing IMO.
