I've searched around and can't find numbers on the dollar amount of the top prize of winning a WRC season... anybody know what it's been in the past?

Man, if only people stopped and thought before replying, we might get something useful out of 'em.

So only sponsors/car manufacturers pay out? WRC is only the venue/organizer?

Found something about Subaru's North American Rallying:

“The 2009 Subaru Rally Support program, which began in 2005, continues to represent the largest total prize payouts in North American rallying, with a total purse of nearly $115,000. The biggest change to the program for 2009 will be a shift of prize money from the Production GT (PGT) class to the newly announced Super Production class (SP)."

That money that they are talking about is only for Subaru cars and is part of thier contingency plan.

Each event they will give out the following ONLY for Subaru cars that are enlisted in the program: http://rally.subaru.com/contingency.html

That is only available to the Super Production (SP) class, not the Open class cars or the manufacturer teams/drivers that are entered.

As far as im aware, guys like Ken and Travis still pay thier normal dues every year to be part of the Subaru team, but only get money from endorsements.

If you want a more exhaustive answer, it pays to ask a better question.

Yes, sponsors and manufacturers sometimes pay the driver (and the co-driver would draw a salary from the driver). At the present time, I believe that there are fewer than 6 drivers who are actually getting paid to drive by a manufacturer in the WRC. The rest are contributing money from their personal fortunes or sponsors. There is no prize money.

WRC is not the organizer. The WRC is a championship organized by the FIA (the sanctioning body) and promoted by ISC.

Subaru USA's Rally Support program is exceptionally generous, but at best it defrays the cost of competition in Rally America. In no way does it provide a living for the competitors.

Thanks for the healthy dose of information.

Why is it that the most talented athletes get paid way less than old men swinging golf clubs?!?!

Probably alot to do with the WRC never taking promotion seriously! ISC are only starting and their contract doesn't really start till 2010! The WRC never had a proper championship promoter before!!!!!!!!

If more manufacturers join the WRC, then there should be more paid drives. When the new 1.6 turbo WRC rules come into force in 2011 there should be more manufacturers. Prodrive are due to announce something before the year end...

Top level rally drivers get paid . . . just not by the WRC/FIA/RA/CARS. Drivers survive on sponsorship money. Every time you see Redbull on car you can guarantee the driver didn't put it on just because he likes to drink Redbull. At the very top level (i.e. WRC) some drivers can probably make a complete living off sponsorship with a few guest appearances and test driving jobs thrown in. At the RA/CARS level sponsorship MAY pay for a large portion of the car for the top teams but it won't pay enough for the driver to be a full time "Rally Driver" so they all have other sources of income too.

Because WRC drivers don't sell product. Pro golfers sell tons of product.

ISC, has been the commercial rights holder for the WRC since ~1996 and tasked solely with the WRC and rally since 2000. This was a 14 year contract. In 2000 David Richards, of Prodrive and SWRT fame bought ISC. Later ISC was sold to North One Communications. The 2010 date is the point in which a new contract begins.

My point being ISC has been the commercial rights holder, IE, promoter for some years, there will be no magical miracle in 2010 with regards to commercial management....

David Richards ten year ISC contract started well in 2000, but when he got serious about F1 again 2001, his rally projects suffered.

ISC may have been the commercial rights holder, but they weren't the promoter of the WRC. That was left up the individual events and entrants, and pretty crap at that many of them are too. ISC's contract as commercial rights holder runs out on the 31st Dec 2010. WRC Promoter is a seperate contract, which will start from 1 January 2011 and run for ten years.

Among other things the Promoter gets control of the calander, something even Bernie didn't have when he owned ISC.

So when Ford and Citroen in the summer of 2008 refused to renew their WRC commitments, for many good reasons, the FIA in late 2008 put the job of WRC Promoter out to tender. If you look back at what Ford was saying in or around August 2008, they were very vocal about lack of a WRC promoter and it was a condition of them continuing in the WRC.

Now North One\ISC, the commercial rights holder is also the promoter. I was hoping some one new would come in and shake things up a bit. Not sure about North One, but they better suceed.

If you are the commercial rights holder wouldn't it make sense to promote the product to make it commercially more valuable....

It would, but they don't really do it in the proper way they should. Hope this new promoter contract works.

Hard to see anyone else taking over from ISC when the commerical rights come up for tender, so they should have a clear run commerical rights and promoting. Wonder how long it will take them to get some American drivers in the WRC, 'cause they need them for the new TV deal to work better.
