Some EGT questions
I know I know, people have posted their EGTs before, but I need some more specifics.
I just installed my guage and probe last night (autometer phantom guage, and their comp probe). I think it's installed a little past 4", maybe around 6", not sure, it's right at the collection point for the pass exhaust ports. Anyway, my EGTs seem pretty low, could be from how rich the car is running, or the distance of the probe. Here are my temps: Idle warm ~800-900 Cruise 35-45mph ~1200 Cruise 45-55mph ~1300 WOT ~1400, still not fixed. When I romped on it, the guage jumped from ~1300 down to about ~1200 then slowly started to rise. I'm going to check the probe a little later, but my only ideas are since the car is running rich, the raw fuel is keeping the EGT probe temps down. It also may be due to the distance of the probe, any ideas? |

Yeah, sounds like you're running real rich. Max. EGT's stock get to 1550, and I wouldn't recommend running a turbo car past that, if not 1500.

Most people place their EGT probes around 3"-4" off the #3 cylinder exhaust port. Your data taken from the collector (?) actually seem quite close to what mine are. My gauge reads in Celcius, and it reads sometimes 800 C at WOT in 3rd gear +.
Thats about 1472 Farenheit. I'm not complaining. At cruise, EGT's like to hover around 600 C, which is close to 1100-1200 Farenheit. If it helps any, my fuel pressure is 51 psi at idle AND cruise. I get around 66.2 psi of fuel pressure under boost, which is 3 psi in 1st-2nd, and 4.3 psi in 3rd-5th. Graham |

Your temps sound about the same as mine were. I never got over 1400. Don't trust the EGT to monitor the motor. I placed the probe about 2 inches from the #3 cylinder and wound up smoking my #4 cylinder. Turns out that the #4 cylinder is the first one in line to get fuel with the stock series fuel delivery. How ironic. I would say running a little rich may help prevent any damage that may occur. If you haven't done the fuel rail mod yet, go do it. It will make your car a hell of a lot safer. It's pretty cheap to do to.

where you running the stock injectors when that happend? (or does it matter?) Jewbaru: FWIW: my temps are similar... but with 370cc inj |

Are you running any piggy backs, or aftermarket ECU, rising rate, bigger injectros? Sounds like when you romp on it you are just dumping way to much fuel in if the temps drop.

Yes, indeed I was running my stock injectors. I will be installing a TEC III when my block is done and I did the fuel rail mod to help too. Should be way more reliable when done. I was running just 4-5 lbs of boost when I broke. I may have had a boost spike but I am not sure. The car didn't make a sound when it broke. It just stopped. Talk about a sinking feeling in your gut. I was sitting there like an idiot on the side of the road with a boken car. I was totaly helpless. I hope this wont happen again. All I can offer to you as advice it to get as many mods done as possible with the money you have to prevent a catastrophy. It's much more expensive to fix later on. And don't trust your EGT meter too much. Get an air/fuel ratio meter and Fuel pressure meter as well. Timing control is critical so take care of that too. Paul... |
