2012+ impreza 2.0I independent foglights?
EDIT, Figured out!
- This mod will allow you to run Fog lights independently from the low beams. - The fog light indicator only will turn on when the low beams are on, this is because of the BIU and I don’t know how to bypass that - See this post for where to tap into the Deicer Relay coil power to provide power to the foglight relay!! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=158 your fogs will turn off with the ignition switch as this wire is drawing power directly off the ignition relay!!! woot woot! - I soldered everything because I hate vampire clips, I almost used them out, but was able to get access to everything. Time required: less than 3 hours, probably can be done in less than 2 but I was testing to make sure this would work. There is no way to modify the VY wires without cutting 1. The relay side could be done with spade connectors, that's how I tested it, but to me this is permanent and that isn't. Tools needed: 10mm socket 10mm wrench Philips Trim pry bars Electrical Tape Wire Ties EITHER: Wire cutters Wire strippers Solder Soldering gun Heat Shrink OR: Vampire clips Butt connectors Passenger Side: 1. Remove Glove Box 2. Remove Glove Box trim 3. You will be left with this 4. There are 2 clips that hold the relay holder in place, press them and remove it, it just pulls off 5. You will then be left with this 6. Black/Green wire needs to be cut and capped further from the relay. The end that goes to the relay needs to have a different 12v source. Probably want to used something switched on by the ignition. I used the Red/Blue wire which ended up not being switched. See this post for where to tap into the Deicer Relay coil power to provide power to the foglight relay!! http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...&postcount=158 your fogs will turn off with the ignition switch as this wire is drawing power directly off the ignition relay!!! woot woot! 7. all done, put it back together you are done with this side. Driver’s Side: Steps 3-7 are optional, you could probably access everything from under the dash and use Vampire clips, but it is less frustrating and easy to get access if you remove the fuse box. 1. Remove the End panel 2. Remove the Panel to the left of the knee air bag 3. Remove the hood release bracket 4. Remove the side fuse box from the main box 5. Remove the 1 bolt and 2 nuts holding the Fuse box 6. Rotate Fuse box out of the way. 7. This is the 2nd plug from the top, this one contains the Violet/Yellow wire that comes directly from the switch. If you put a meter on this and ground the other side and turn the switch on there is no resistance. Anyway 8. I opted to add a few pieces of wire and solder everything. I hate crimp connections and I figured this will be a permanent mod for me anyway. Here is the final result 9. Put everything back together End Result: No lights Fog Lights ONLY, I have yellow overlays on my Outback foglights

This is something I was hoping had an answer already. I'm use to driving with foglights and just parking lights on.....wish I still could with my '13 Impreza Sport

What about using a DPDT relay between the high beam and low beam circuit. You could mount an activation switch of your choice, this will allow you to swap the high beams for the low beams that the light switch is calling for. This will allow the fogs to be on with highs. You could also utilize a SPST just before it to disable the DRL, in the case you want parking lights and fog combination. I havnt looked at a schematic to actually pinpoint where I'd locate that relay, but I know that's where I'd look at starting if I were to do a project like this.

This is a priority for me but I wanted to wait until I did the outback fogs upgrade. It's ridiculous that you can't operate then without the low beams on.
I'm in no position to do this myself, so a few weeks ago I found a tuner/state inspection shop with a bunch of WRX's and STI's out front (good omen my book) and asked him about doing this mod. I told him I just want to be able to run the fogs with the parking lights, and he said he'd need to find the schematic for the wiring, but it should be doable. I'm willing to have this done before upgrading my fogs, just to help you guys out, but it would have to be after the holidays. I'll ask him if he'll do a write up for the DIY crowd too ;-) |

I wonder if you could just do an independent relay in addition to the stock wiring.

The only reason I mentioned the high beam drl is it is illegal in this state to drive with headlights off, I think that could still meet requirement as would appear your headlights still on Would it be possible to use the parking light wire to target trigger the foglight relay? That could actually work I think, need to check the diagram Ansk, That was another option, then you could turn them on whenever, but without parking lights on you are asking for trouble I'm going to check the diagram this morning and see if I can change from low beam trigger to parking light Last edited by flyboy1100; 12-04-2013 at 06:09 AM. |

What trouble are you referring to? Are you referring to a dead battery if I for get to turn it off? I was looking at the Hella 500 wiring diagram for ideas. I could tap the parking lights or the accessory outlet. So it would only turn on if the car was on. I figured if I just added it to the existing wiring, I could control them independently or if i leave it off, then I could just use the stock control.

No. it's only on when the light is at OFF position. It will be off after you switch to any other light setting. or have the handbrake on.
This guy is able to change the default light setting on a 2012 WRX. Should be the same on the Impreza 12+. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=2383843 But the Impreza's OEM fog light is useless. I don't see the point of using it alone. Barely notice it's on, I only turn it on when it's totally dark on the street. |

Winglik, here's what the lighting guru says;
http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...fog_lamps.html I'm guessing legality is the reason why they wired them to the lows. Freaking nannies... |

I looked at the diagram but I can't figure out how the light computer works
I would have this done already Except for that stupid computer |

I compared our diagram to the older generation legacy (which I think is similar to the rest)
anyway those look like they were ground switched. ours looks like the switch goes to the computer, then from there to the relay I guess we could just bypass the computer? is there any reason that wouldn't work, it appears to be 12v switched |

Your sport has the fog switch on the stalk, correct? Would that make the wiring on mine different, since it's on the dash?

If I had a copy of the diagram, maybe I could give you some ideas. Wouldn't a simple spst relay on the low beam side to lights do it then? Just open the circuit to low beams when you need. Not sure if these cars monitor blown bulbs like my ram does, but I doubt it. If so, DPDT relay with resistor of required specs on open side to truck computer into thinking it has bulbs connected

I haven't installed my Outback fog lights yet as I wanted to figure out how to do the wiring the first. I was also thinking about wiring it to the parking light.

Subscribed. I would also love to be able to turn on my fogs with just my parking lights on. Have been waiting for someone to figure it out ever since I bought my Impreza. Hopefully someone will be able to figure out a way that doesn't involve a lot of modding or electrical know-how.

could it be as simple as send +12v (from an ignition switched source) to the switch and the GND side send that to the Relay trigger instead of to GND?
or even just the +12v side of the switch, just send that wire to the relay trigger? is that relay triggered off the GND? like I said, I understand the schematics just enough to not really know how to work around it |

To be clear, your wanting to be able to replicate lights on dim with fog lights on, just without the actual low beam headlights on, correct? What I would do, 2 SPDT relays, few bucks each at auto parts store. Look at 3 rd pic I believe, H/L-02: F125 refers to LH low beam bulb. F126 refers to RH low beam bulb If we break the circuit between tap 26 on F27 relay and tap 1 on F125-Black wire, and break the circuit between tap 11 on F27 relay and tap 1 on F126- Red wire, we leave everything intact except the actual low beam bulb. Doing this will keep fogs on if selected on stalk, and you can still switch to high beams should you need to flash headlights. The relays will need a switched power tap to activate and a ground. You can share both of these between the relays as you'll want them switched together. I would mount a little micro switch somewhere and once activated, all we are doing is just cutting out low beam bulbs. This gives you parks, blinkers, brakes, fogs, etc like normal. Then should you want to remove the setup all together, its easy and minimally invasive, so it'll be a snap and will not affect anything else. This is my idea, from a quick look at the schematics. There are many ways of doing this, however most others would be too complicated and involved enough that you run a risk of messing up other things. This is a simple circuit break on power to low beams. Since high beams and low beams share common grounds, if we broke that circuit you would lose the ability to switch to high beams quickly should you need. I think that could be a hazard. I'll continue to look over and see if i see any reason this wouldn't work, but I think based on what I see its a very simple
