Default concerns about the coolant reservoir

... the metal one high up on the passenger front of the engine bay next to the power steering reservoir, not the plastic overflow tank.

i was at the shop today and a mechanic there was working on a dead wrx. turbo was cooked or something (missed the first half of the conversation). he had the turbo out of the car and all the coolant lines and fittings dismantled. in one of the banjo bolts the holes were stuffed with what looked almost like tea leaves. what it actually was is tiny paint chips from the inside of the filler neck of the coolant reservoir that had made their way from the reservoir to the turbo. the reservoir was completely drained and there was more paint chips at the bottom as well cluttered around the outlet.

does ne1 have prior knowledge of this? is this common or just a freak occurence?

Paint from where? I have never heard of this before but I'm surious where in the world you would get paint in your coolant.

It happened to me also when I flushed out my coolant earlier this summer. I was cleaning the area around the filler neck and it started peeling off. I cleaned it up as best as I could, but on every flush/refill I never had them come out, only when I wiped the filler neck with a paper towel the first time.

I know that my coolant Definately had this in it too. I looked at it and thought something was wrong but then decided that it was what subaru would have called NORMAL. But, heck I dont know.

I have had the same problems, if you noticed Subaru used the black painted coolant resevoir and switched to the non painted ones on the later 02-03 + model years. Hmm I wonder why

so this isn't an uncommon problem? has ne1 else heard of any turbo failures resulting from this?

should i be hitting the salvage yards for a later-model coolant reservoir?

I had paint in mine the first time I removed the cap...

Flush the coolant and remove the supply and return coolant banjos on the turbo to clean them out.

theoretically wouldn't the turbo be under warranty if something like that caused it to fail?

I don't remember seeing any paint chips in mine...

no warranty. the car was heavily modified. i think it was running a vf30 or a vf34.

I just changed my coolant, here's what I saw:




I didn't know to wipe all the paint off, but I'll definitely take off the cap and wipe that down next chance I get...

Pull it off, soak it in toluene and repaint the outside. You'd be moeny when you're done.

one of the subaru tuner shops locally suggested pulling the reservoir out, flush it, then unbolt the top cover and have it stripped and anodized?

Ok, went to take the cover out and couldn't get the hoses off (got the clamps removed, but the hoses wouldn't budge), so I cleaned off what paint I could by unbolting it and went to put it back together and, clumsy me, dropped one of the bolts into the engine bay and I'll be damned if I can find it...

Anyone know what type of bolt that is, or where I can find the part number? I can't find it in the SSM, and looking through SubaruParts.com this is the best view I can find of that area of the engine:



As you can see it says check "Fig.036" which doesn't help me any.

Was it one of the two bolts securing the coolant tank to the intanke manifold?

Most of the bolts in that area are stubby flanged M8x1.25... but unless you can be more accurate which bolt you lost, that's just a guess.

If it is, just steal one of the bolts from the injector covers (green brackets of death)... you don't need all of them anyway.

Oh, sorry, it's the bolts on the coolant cover, around the radiator cap. The bolts in the pics above. I think there are 5 or 6 of them all-total?

Default bolts

They are 6mm bolts. Take one of them out and go to Lowes. The have them over in the drawers with the rest of the bolts. I had to replace one when I put in the FMIC. Check it out. If I am not mistaken, they are 6mm.

This is real news to me. I'm going to have to check this out on mine. However, I don't know what the long term effects are of temp and coolant on a hard anodized surface. I've seen some brake hats that were hard anodized that had some really funky surface finishes after they were repeatedly hit with water from a local car wash. I couldn't tell if it would've flaked later on.

If you do hard anodize, do a search on what the mil-spec requirements are for hard anodize black because there lots of different degrees of hardness and they might have a mil-spec specifically for corrosion protection. The thicker the better but if you go too thick you won't get the bolts back in.

The cover bolts I think are 6 x 1mm but I don't know how long they are (25 or 30mm).

Now I know subaru really rushed production of this model just to get to market. It's no wonder they're all willing to deny warranty to everyone but the granny's that buy this car.

Is there any trick to getting the hoses off? I had zero luck... they seemed stuck fast.

Use a heat gun to warm them up. Then use a flat tip screwdriver as a pry bar between the end of the hose and whatever flat surface the hose nipple is mounted in.
