Default Future Modds: Wrx 2006

I have recently bought a 2006 WRX TR (american specs USDM) with a very low original mileage (12000 miles) from its first owner. I really like the car and I have been a subaru fan since long time specially the WRX/STI. The car comes pure stock. I am working on the exterior modifications like STI wing, STI side skirts, Front Lip, Windows Tint and I might go for the STI complete interior swap (seats) but not sure yet because I don't wanna spend too much money except on performance.

I have purchased a WRX not an STI because of two main reasons: It's my daily driven car and I love to build a car from a base model.

As for performance modifications, here is the list for a future plan - Stage 2 Cobb Tuning:

- Cobb Accessport
- Cobb SF intake + SF box
- Cobb Turbo back exhaust system (3" SS down pipe + 3" catback)
- Cobb xle BPV
- Cobb adjustable short throw shifter (incl. the knob)
- Cobb Boost control solenoid

The tuning garage told me that I need a Pro Tune (ECU Tuning) since I am installing the intake and the BPV.

Since am not an expert, my question is why I need a Pro Tune while I have the Accessport? Is it true that the intake and BLV cause damages to the engine and are not neccessary? (I have been reading dozens of threads related to those 2 mods)

What do you think of my future plan? any comments? I do not want to go for any further complicated engine modifications in the future except maybe a front intercooler and a VF39 turbo but not at the moment.

Share your opinions.

another question related to the short throw shifter: what is the difference between the narrow and wide barrel?

Skip the bpv, boost control, intake.. waste of money at your power level. read up on the cobb tunes. Not really needing a protune.

Then search the forums as all the STi crap with bolt onto a WRX for those years.

Just bolt on a vf39 and call it a day. No need to add issues with a fmic unless you go much bigger in the turbo dept.
The car will be perfect with a vf39. Anything else and you will need to build up the gearbox.

I have to agree here. The Cobb BCS is a complete waste of time, until you run a larger turbo than OEM. The Cobb SF intake will net you no increases, except a warmer intake air charge. As for the XLE BPV, its just a waste... Period.

Stage two is all fine and dandy, but having a VF turbo on a 2.5L car is just damn fun! The 06 has enough injector to run the STi turbo without any real work, but it is still recommended to swap out with an 07 rail and injectors at some point. (side feed vs top feed).

Imho, you should do the following:
STi or better TMIC
3" Turbo-back (DP, Catback)
VF series turbo (VF43 or VF48 > VF39)
"Stage 3" tune, Accessport or Opensource.

I would suggest reading the manifesto at the intake section and bov. You can learn a lot from that.

At first I want an intake but after reading it, I pass and keep my money for a nice protune.

I own a 2007 WRX and have been modding it for awhile. Start with this: Get a 3" turbo back (I have Invidia and love it), K&N panel filter for the intake, and a Cobb Accessport. Run the stage 2 tune and you will be happy for awhile. Its a good kick in the pants over stock and you can go from there with further mods.

Down the road you can amass a bigger TMIC, VFxx, uppipe, EWG, EBCS, injectors etc etc and put them all on at once and get a pro-tune. Take it slow, get to "Stage 2" first and I bet you will be happy for awhile.

You can get ANY turboback, doesn't have to be 3", Up pipe is nearly useless on a car with a catless one already, and you can do a lot more turbo upgrades then a VF series.

AND, what you posted is what the OP already said he wanted to do. So you basically said nothing.

Uppipe is congruent with getting an EWG setup (GS makes a nice one), and yes I know there are many turbos out there but VF series are simple installs and you can find lots of used STi turbos for cheap (notice the OP wants to limit his cash output). Calm down.

Because OP is getting an EWG?

You still get decent gains swapping an aftermarket catless uppipe for the OEM catless uppipe.

Very true, but considering that "Stage 3" is only 3 more nuts, two worm gear clamps, a banjo bolt and two coolant lines, when using a VF turbo... It's just a simple tune away!

Extremely small, and in the form of a slightly quicker spool.

I hate the "stage" concept with a passion.

As do I, which is why I quote it. I used to heckle people that would come onto the mustang forums and ask about stage blah blah blah.

I was only really calling it as I was, because of the Cobb "Stage 3" map, which is a VF, STi or better TMIC, and DP... +/- catback.

Absolute most important thing is your tuner...spend the money on a great tune.

I would probably do good aftermarket seats instead of STi ones unless you can get a good deal on STi ones. They are built wider for us porky Americans.

Don't forget about brakes and suspension--if all you wanted was straight line speed, a V8 would have been a better option.

thanks for sharing your thoughts ...

a bigger tmic means a bigger turbo lag? thats the logic. willing to go with the STI one and a VF39 or 48 with an ECU tune.

As for the moment, I will stick to the Cobb full exhaust system with the accessport and the short shifter. the boost control solenoid is not expensive. will it add any hp gain?

believe it or not, i falled in love with the WRX since i was a kid because of the BOV tissss tisss sound :P it was a black bugeye and that was love from first sight. I am not getting one after i have read many articles and reviews but still deep inside lovin the sound

sorry if am not the expert here, but why to go with an ECU tune at a later stage and i have the accessport that can tune my ECU? someone explain to me what is the story here.

Based on your last post, you still have a lot of learning to do before you mod.

A BCS will not add any HP to your car, and will require you to to pay for a professional tune. Cobb does not, and likely will not have OTS tunes for their BCS.

A bigger intercooler isn't always better. Which is why, for the mods you listed, most of us only recommend an STi core. It has been proven to be highly effective and hard to beat for the money.

As for why you have to tune the car, if you still don't yet understand how finnicky these cars are, then you should really just leave yours stock.

Take the next week or so to read Unibombers manifesto. While most of the info is dated, old and mostly pertaining to 2.0L stuff... It's still decent info.

This thread makes my head hurt.

Especially because someone posted that an aftermarket up flowed a WHOPPING 40 some cfm's more, which means SLIGHTLY QUICKER SPOOL as already mentioned.
