New Williams will be revealed after the first test on Feb 19th.

Quote:
Williams's 2013 Formula 1 car will not be ready for the first winter test of the season and will make its debut at the second test on 19 February.

The team has announced that the FW35 will be unveiled at Barcelona on 19 February, the opening day of test two.

For the first test at Jerez on 5-8 February, Williams will run an updated version of its 2012 car.

"We will be running the FW34 (with 2013 livery) in Jerez to test a number of key development parts in preparation for the launch of the FW35," said a team statement.

Williams has retained Renault power for 2013, with Spanish Grand Prix winner Pastor Maldonado also staying on.

Former test driver Valtteri Bottas replaces Bruno Senna in the second car.

Last season the team took its first victory since 2004, but inconsistent form meant it only finished eighth in the constructors' championship.

Force India 'could collapse' amid Mallya crisis
Force India's embattled owner is experiencing "severe economic difficulties with his companies".

Jan.18 (GMM) Force India "is in crisis" and it is possible the Silverstone based team "could collapse".

That is the claim of the Italiaracing magazine, who correctly reported some years ago that Pirelli would become the sport's new tyre supplier.

Now, the Italian publication is reporting from sources that Vijay Mallya - Force India's embattled owner who has lost his billionaire status - is experiencing "severe economic difficulties with his companies".

Mallya's troubles with Kingfisher, his grounded Indian airline, are well known, but the 57-year-old also controls United Breweries, and F1 team Force India.

Italiaracing claims that, in recent days, F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone has "activated a plan to save the (Force India) team."

The sources mentioned the possibility of a return to F1 for Colin Kolles, the team boss who in the wake of the Silverstone based team Jordan's demise some years ago led the subsequent incarnations Spyker and Midland, and finally Force India.

As head of HRT, Kolles left F1 at the end of 2011, a year before the Spanish team's collapse under new management.

Italiaracing also mentioned the former Renault chief and well-known Ecclestone ally Flavio Briatore, who has been out of F1 since the 'crashgate' scandal.

I'd really hate to see FI go. They really turned around the crap that had become of Jordan.

Bye bye Timo??? Maybe opens the door for Kobash, Senna, or Heikki?

http://www.autosport.com/news/grapevine.php/id/105207

Quote:
Timo Glock's future with Marussia has been thrown into doubt after the German was quoted on Sunday as saying he was leaving the outfit.

A report on the website of the German Sport Bild newspaper stated that Glock and Marussia had agreed to part terms by mutual consent, and that an announcement would be made on Monday.

It quoted Glock as saying: "I have had three great years at the Marussia F1 team. We part on amicable terms. I want to find new challenges for myself and continue my journey in motorsports."

No one at Marussia was available for comment on Sunday night to confirm or deny the report.

Glock joined Marussia at the start of its Formula 1 adventure in 2010. Despite early frustrations with the competitiveness of the outfit, he signed a three-year deal in the middle of 2011 to remain on board.

That was supposed to have kept him at the team until the end of 2014, and he told AUTOSPORT last year that committing for such a length of time was essential for keeping morale high at the outfit.

"Signing up showed everyone that I was behind the team, and trying to move forward," he said. "Don't be negative, just try to be as positive as possible - which is not easy. With a 22nd qualifying position, five seconds behind the top guys, you can't tell people this is positive. And that's sometimes difficult."

Marussia has signed rookie Max Chilton for this season and, if Glock leaves, it would most likely need to find a more experienced team-mate to work alongside him.

rumormill: neither Sutil nor di Resta will drive for Force India
reason: not enough money from their sponsors
new pay drivers would be: Luiz Razia and Bruno Senna, each of them (their sponsors) would pay 12.000.000 dollarbucks

Petrov and his freshly laundered bags o money

Marussia might be a good car this year, with KERS and a hand from Mclaren technology center.

field will be bunched up nice and tight due to lack of rule changes. i hope caterham got their **** together this year. they keep underwhelming and last place is there for the taking.

Caterham will launch their car on the morning of the first test, Feb 5th.

http://en.espnf1.com/caterham/motors...ory/99002.html

Quote:
Caterham will launch its 2013 car, the CT03, at the first day of testing on February 5 at Jerez.

The new car will be unveiled in the pit lane 15 minutes before the start of the first pre-season testing session and will hit the track immediately after. The car is the team's second under the Caterham name, but will be known as the CT03 as the CT02 name has been given to Caterham's joint road car project with Renault brand Alpine.

The team has yet to name its second driver alongside Charles Pic, with Vitaly Petrov and Bruno Senna thought to be in the running. Last year the team went to the first test with Jarno Trulli as one of its drivers before replacing him with Petrov at the second test.

I think that'd be an ok move for either of those three drivers, especially considering none of them have a 2013 drive. what's a backwards move from not having a job?

i hope senna can bag one of those seats though.

Exactly what I was going to say as well.

That would really be a bombshell if DIR lost his seat, and would confirm any financial problems at FI for sure. Didn't think silly season would be into February...

After Marussia lost 10th place in the standings at the very last race, their financial situation started looking much more bleak. I think they were counting on having that money (rumoured to be as much as $35M) for operating expenses this year.

Timo's not a paying driver, right? No doubt they needed his experience to help develop the car, but I think their finances have taken a turn for the worse, and they basically told him, "We can't pay you." Their only option at this point is to find another paying driver and limit development this season. Operating expenses should be higher this year with the addition of KERS.

I fear they may be headed down the same road as HRT...

I hate to see him go, but I can't really blame them. Losing 10th place was a gut wrenching blow to them. No doubt he would still be there otherwise. Curious to see who they end up with since Chilton is about to debut. My money's on Petrov.

On the flip side, Mercedes seems to have a blank checkbook and it's open season on big players:

Quote:
EJ: Lowe to Merc, Brawn and Fry out

Eddie Jordan - the man who brought you the Lewis Hamilton to Mercedes scoop last year - is at it again, this time claiming the team are set to replace Ross Brawn as team principal.

Less than a day after the Brackley squad confirmed that former Williams man Toto Wolff has joined them as director of motorsport, Germany's Sport Bild claimed that McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe has followed Hamilton from McLaren to Mercedes.

However, BBC F1 pundit Jordan took it a bit further by revealing that team boss Brawn and chief executive officer Nick Fry - the two men who saved the squad when Honda withdrew from the sport after the 2008 season - are set to be replaced.

"Paddy Lowe is going to Mercedes and it would appear that Brawn and Fry are on their way out, and Lowe will be there in a very senior capacity," Jordan is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"Lowe won't be technical director; he'll be more senior than that. But he won't be called team principal either," Jordan said, "because that will be Wolff. But Lowe will effectively be running the team on a day-to-day basis."

Wolff talked to the media during a teleconference on Tuesday afternoon, but he didn't give too much away saying "he wants Ross Brawn to stay" but he "can't say anything about Paddy Lowe rumour".

Lowe to follow Hamilton to Merc?

The reshuffling at Mercedes continues apace with the latest reports linking the team with a move for McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe.

Having already signed Lewis Hamilton from the Woking squad and lured Toto Wolff from Williams, Mercedes have now set their sights on Lowe.

Germany's Sport Bild - the sister publication of Bild Zeitung, who got the scoop that Wolff would step down as Williams executive director to take up the role of Mercedes director of motorsport - claims a deal with Lowe has been done.

The 50-year-old Lowe has been with McLaren for two decades and oversaw the Championship wins of Mika Hakkinen (1998, 1999) and Hamilton (2008).

Both Mercedes and McLaren are yet to comment on the reports, but Ross Brawn's outfit has made several changes to their technical department in recent years.

Mercedes have made several changes to their technical department in recent years with former Renault technical chief Bob Bell, former Ferrari man Aldo Costa and Geoff Willis, who joined from HRT having previously worked at Brackley during the BAR days, all joining in 2011.

Quote:
Mercedes want to replace team principal Ross Brawn as part of a restructure aimed at improving the team's performance.

The proposal is to replace Brawn, who masterminded Michael Schumacher's seven world titles at Benetton and Ferrari, with two new appointments.

New executive director Toto Wolff is the first of these and he has agreed a deal to bring in McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe.

Their intended job titles are not clear but Wolff, 41, will likely be team boss and figurehead with Lowe, 50, running the sporting and technical aspects.

McLaren have refused to comment on the situation.

On Tuesday afternoon Wolff said in response that he "hoped Ross was going to stay". But he would not be drawn on whether Brawn would be replaced as team principal.

"I admire what Ross has done but I need to understand the structure and what Ross has done," he said.

"At this stage it would be foolish to come in and speak about replacing anybody.

"There is speculation which is coming up in some of the media."

On Lowe, he said: "I think he is a recognised person in the paddock who has been with McLaren for 15-20 years. In Formula 1, there's always a lot of speculation about people."

The planned restructure would leave no obvious place for Brawn or chief executive officer Nick Fry, the two men who in the winter of 2008/9 saved what has become Mercedes following the withdrawal from Formula 1 of then-owners Honda.

The Brawn F1 team won the 2009 drivers' title with Jenson Button as well as that year's constructors' title before being taken over by Mercedes ahead of the 2010 season.

BBC Sport understands Lowe has agreed to join Mercedes but has not yet signed a contract - so there is a possibility, however small, that he will stay at McLaren.

However, it seems he is keen to move on from his role as technical director as he had previously accepted a position as team principal at Williams, which was offered to him by Wolff, before the Mercedes offer came up.

But although Wolff is now committed to taking Lowe with him to Mercedes, BBC Sport understands the German company's initial contact with Lowe pre-dated Wolff's involvement.

BBC F1 chief analyst Eddie Jordan, who has broken two major Mercedes stories in the last three years - with their signings of Schumacher in 2010 and Lewis Hamilton for 2013 - has independently also discovered the team's plans.

"Paddy Lowe is going to Mercedes and it would appear that Brawn and Fry are on their way out, and Lowe will be there in a very senior capacity," Jordan said.

"Lowe won't be technical director; he'll be more senior than that. But he won't be called team principal either," Jordan said, "because that will be Wolff. But Lowe will effectively be running the team on a day-to-day basis."

It remains to be seen how Mercedes will resolve a potentially sticky situation.

The plans of Wolff and Mercedes F1 non-executive director Niki Lauda are to keep Brawn in place until Lowe's 'gardening leave' from McLaren is completed. This period is usually six months off work for senior personnel moving employers.

But if Brawn knows he is to be replaced it seems unlikely he would want to stay on just to keep things going for Lowe.

Mercedes' decision to remodel the top of the team has been based on the perceived need for change at an F1 team who have performed below expectations for the last three years.

Mercedes effectively brought Brawn into existence in early 2009 by agreeing to provide them with engines following Honda's withdrawal.

But staff cuts made because of a lack of budget during 2009 contributed to a dip in form when the team morphed into Mercedes in 2010, when Schumacher joined after coming out of retirement.

Joining the team that had just won the world title and renewing his partnership with Brawn, the German legend expected to be able to challenge for an eighth world championship.

Instead, Mercedes have won just one race in three years, and Schumacher's best result was an inherited third place at Valencia last year. He also set pole position in Monaco in 2012 but was demoted by a grid penalty.

Although 2012 started promisingly, with good qualifying form in several early races and a win by Schumacher's team-mate Nico Rosberg at the third race of the season in China, the team's form dipped alarmingly and by the end of the season they were struggling even to score points.

Brawn has insisted that they had been hit by a technical reshuffle that impacted on their attempts to develop last year's car and has said that he believes the right structure for success is now in place at Mercedes.
funny

Quote:
Andrew Benson Chief F1 writer

"There is a huge irony for McLaren in Mercedes' desire to poach their technical director Paddy Lowe.

"The Brawn team were only able to come into existence after the personal intervention of McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh with the Mercedes board.

"Four years later, the team has been taken over by Mercedes, and the German company has dropped McLaren as its works team.

"For the first time this season, McLaren have to pay for their Mercedes engines and now they could lose their technical director to their former partner as well.

"McLaren faced a similar situation in 2001, when their then technical director Adrian Newey - now the chief technical officer of world champions Red Bull - struck a deal to join Jaguar.

"Newey was later persuaded to change his mind by then-McLaren team principal Ron Dennis, now the chairman of the McLaren Group.

"But his dissatisfaction at McLaren eventually led him to leave and join Red Bull, which had taken over Jaguar, in 2006."

Lotus has chosen to launch its 2013 Formula 1 car, the E21, online.

The new car will be unveiled via the Lotus YouTube channel at 19.15 UK time on Monday January 28.

The event will also be broadcast live on Sky Sports News HD in the UK.

Lotus's choice of date means it will be the first F1 team to take the wraps off a 2013 car, as its unveiling takes place three days before McLaren's.

The team has retained Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean for this season after taking a big step forward in performance during 2012.

Still trying to get a good lineup...

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/105268

Quote:
Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone says the 2013 calendar could still include 20 races, with France and Portugal showing interest to host the event.

The calendar was modified by the FIA at the end of last year to make room for a European race on July 21.

Venues like the Red Bull Ring in Austria or Istanbul in Turkey were linked to the slot, but their chances seem to have evaporated and Ecclestone said in December that he expected the calendar to include just 19 events.

Ecclestone now says talks are still ongoing about a possible deal to have 20 races, and revealed the Algarve circuit in Portugal has now entered the frame.

"To be honest, I don't know," said Ecclestone when asked about plans for the July 21 slot.

"There is interest still in France, and now also in Portugal. They want to do it at the new Algarve track.

"For Germany, it would be Nurburgring. Let's see if they can put it together."

Ecclestone admitted, however, that the race was unlikely to be added to the calendar as Formula 1 teams were not keen to have an extra GP.

He added: "If someone wants to have the 20th race, it will happen, if the track is there and okay. We can help [with] organising.

"However, the teams do not seem to be in favour of this race. I doubt it will happen."

The Briton also insisted the calendar will not be expanded beyond 20 races in the future, despite several countries wanting to join.

"No. Twenty [is] the maximum amount," he said.

It's official: I will be at the 2013 Canadian Grand Prix! I'm going with the silver trio package, so I'll be at the hairpin Friday and Saturday and at Turn 2 on Sunday!

I'll be in uncovered grandstands, so I hope it doesn't rain...

Awesome! I did the gold trio package so maybe we'll meet up sometime during the weekend.

Do you know where you're staying yet? I might book our condo/apt tomorrow with my friend, actually.

Not too bad, actually. After comparing costs for going to Spain or Belgium, Canada was pretty competitive. I lucked out and found a hotel with an 8+/10 rating that's about 30% cheaper than the rest of the comparable hotels during the weekend, but still includes free breaksfast and free internets (so I can spam all of you with pics, of course). Total cost for hotel ($900 for 4 nights), flight from the UK ($730), and race tickets (~$500) worked out to be about as expensive as the Spanish Grand Prix, but usually much more exciting.

I'm staying in a hotel on the east side of the river, about 2 minutes/1 stop by train to the circuit. I learned from Monaco last year that it's damn smart to stay somewhere east of the circuit, so the trains are less full. No clown cars here! Everyone else will be heading west after the race.

We should definitely meet up and grab a beer. I would have gone with the gold package as well, but it's now sold out, and I don't want to be shooting through a fence on Sunday.

I also just bought my ticket for Britain! It's the cheapest race for me to attend because it's about 2 hours by car from my house (so no hotel or excessive travel costs). I'll be parked at Club...
