OMGHi2U Rotating turbo with an adapater

Moderators, if this is the wrong spot please move my thread.

Cliff Notes: I want to rotate my stock location vf39 using an adapter while keeping the STI TMIC. Not for performance gains. I want to clean up the engine bay and make my car easier to work on. My parts are pictured in this thread. How can I make it happen?

Initial thoughts, but I'm probably over simplifying - install adapter, shorten the up pipe (is that ok?) to make up for added adapter length, alter the down pipe.

Before anyone says it, my trans is an andrewtech built 5spd with straight cut ppgs i don't want the 6spd.

I'm a web developer and pretty much didn't know jack about cars when I purchased this Subaru about 4 years ago. I still don't really know jack. Did my first oil change on this. I'm really trying to learn and have been turning this into a new hobbie… something I can do offline. I've only done a limited amount of things on my own. Clutch swap, master/slave cylinder replacement, brake pads/rotors/lines, pitch mount, ac hard lines/compressors/condensor removal, air pump, valves and lines removal, cowl braces, trans mount and cross member bushings, spark plugs.

Would like to rotate my stock location vf39 turbo using an adapter. Not for performance gains. My goal for now is to just clean my engine bay up and make the car easier to work on. The kicker is I also I want to keep my STI TMIC until I'm ready to invest the cash into a full kit.

ps- I'm completely cool with removing things that aren't needed if I can.

Sorry my post is so long, but trying to be complete. Feel free to help me or tell me ideas/car sucks. It's all good. Or that I'm way over simplifying and what I'd really need to do to make this happen.

Here is the car as it sits now:

Here is the adapter I want to use (original thread about adapter):

Here is my up pipe (mad dad ceramic coated - what's the plug for? Can it be shortend to make up for added length of the turbo adapter?):

Here is my down pipe (no clue who made it - any ideas? This would be cut and rotated?)

Here is my turbo (vf39 - wtf, is all the build up on it from? also, doesn't appear to have any shaft play… I youtubed how to check that. No movement - good right?)

Here is my air intake (spt - what do I do with all the lines after installing the new inlet?)

So do you have questions? or is this a soon to be DIY thread about youre car.

Ive already done this exact same thing, APS use to make an adapter years ago but has long since stopped making it. They didnt make many, they were cast iron. If you tig weld it all you will be fine. My first mock/test piece cracked with in a couple hundered miles just as i suspected it would do to the heat. Mig welds dont hold up to heat cycling with out the material cracking at the weld seam. Tig welding did the trick and the setup is long gone to a friend over seas so I dont have current pics, not sure i have old ones either because that lap top that had the pics was stolen during a break in at our shop.

I have recently bought more Subaru flanges and I want to make another one for my wifes car soon.

Oh, and you will need 90* pipes to hack up. The final design of the adapter looks like an "S" shape. The 2 90's will need to be cut in half and only use about 4" of each one. The OBX/Garrett rotated kit is pretty much what you need to copy it from just as I did.

Hey thanks for the reply. I don't plan on welding anything myself. I don't have the welding equipment or experience to do that. I plan on purchasing a piece from a member on iwsti forum who sells them. I believe he posts on NASIOC as well. The down / up I'll take to an exhaust shop to have modified. To start though, I just want to know if this whole idea is doable using my existing parts, before I purchase the adapter?

Here is the thread: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/engine-p...-adaptors.html

I suppose my thread can be viewed for reference. Not really comprehensive diy though...

It's good to hear you were able to do it. Do you have any pics of the setup?

The problem with that is he is not using a stock Subaru flange at both ends. If you plan to cut his off and weld on a subaru flange i dont think it will work. Mine looked totally different for it to fit. Most exhaust shops do NOT tig weld, the OP in that thread is Tig welding those flanges which is correct. You will likely have to take it to a Fab shop that builds race exhaust or like wise. They will likely charge you out the a$$ to weld it and make a down pipe. In the end you will be in it just as much as a up pipe and down pipe would cost for a true rotated kit. Or just buy the OBX kit for $250 and swap the flanges over, and also cut off the EWG pipe and real it back off. That has been done many times.

Ok, thanks for helping me understand this better. So, in order for this adapter to work with my existing turbo it would need to have the same flange on both top and bottom. This is because my turbine housing uses a stock style flange, and the one pictured in my thread is different? Then it would just be a matter of having the up/down pipe tig welded/modified to work? I'll call around and get some pricing quotes about this.

To clarify, both top and bottom flange need to look like this?

I'm doing some research and it has been brought to my attention that the intake manifold would possibly interfere with the fitment of the turbo if I was to shorten the upipe. I guess at this point my only option is order the adapter and see for myself. I can't really find much information about people doing this with a TMIC

there are a good amount of people with rotated setups and TMIC. TIC use to run a tmic with a rotated turbo in their TA car, it is possible

I tried telling you I have DONE what you are trying to do!! I might just make you one if you have some time (month or so) for me to get caught up on other stuff. I can make one for a stock subaru turbo again, but I just dont have time. Buying the one from that guy will be pointless for you. Its not going to work for what you want to do because its for a large T3/T4 turbo flange and the direction for fitment wont work even if you got his and replaced the T4 flange or V band flange he offers with a subaru flange it wont work.

You need to buy 2 of these and make one from scratch like I do.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=380478247320

What you are trying to do here is not hard to do. BUT nobody makes a bolt on kit for this that im aware of. you have to make it youre self. If you dont know how to or dont have the tools to do so. Well you shouldnt be messing with it until you can just buy something thats ready to bolt together.

Awesome - is that your car? I wasn't sure if I'd be able to keep the SPT intake or not. I really like that idea, because for now I'd like to do this setup buying/modifying/replacing as few parts as possible. This is something I could do with a TMIC too?

I believe there are 5 hoses that connect to the intake inlet. I don't really know what I'm suppose to do with all the hoses that connect to the inlet, if the air intake is now connected directly to the turbo.

I'll need to do more research. Sorry, I'm such a n00b, but def want to learn.

Thanks for helping out so far guys.

Yeah that FMIC piping is a bit odd looking with that routing. I would have cut a hole bu the head light bucket/bracket and ran it through there on both sides for a cleaner look. I used my CAI when I did mine. I had to purchase a slightly longer silicone hose but it worked great and looked great. I kept my watercooler TMIC though.

Regarding the vf39 turbo and spt intake photo that bhhamblin posted above, I would just need a new coupler like this one in order to connect the two correct?

It's a 2.4in to 3in offset silicon coupler.

You couldn't find any one local, or nobody at all? Was there a reason why they wouldn't do it? I'm a web developer at a tech school (Florida Tech), so I'm sure I could get a mechanical engineering student to do it if all else fails.

Well you definitely need a tubing bender and if you have a nice stainless Down pipe most people want it tig welded. But the Down pipe doesnt have to be tig welded really unless its right at the turbo. In this case you would just be extending the area just after the bend. You can Mig weld that if you want, but you would have to coat it with some VHT high temp paint and heat wrap the down pipe. The would help prevent the Mig welds from cracking at the down pipe and heat wrap would hide everything.

Anyways kids, I got an adapter made today and the Jig is just about complete. All i gotta do is drill locating holes and itll be ready to mass produce.

Snapped a few crappy pics of the adapter. Dont judge on the adapters looks or spot welds, it was just for locating purposes for the Jig. Didnt need to look pretty, just that everything was in the right place.

Anyways

*The welds on the Jig are also just quick but solid mig welds, nothing fancy because its not needed. The jig is not a show piece!! It will work, and the final product will be beautiful and Tig welded.

I did test fit this in the car with a WRX, NOT an STi..... because it will fit on an STi too. But the 02-05 WRX has drive by cable and the cruise control module is mounted on the passenger side strut tower (close to the turbo). So I had to make this fit for older WRX's.

There is plenty of room for guys running 18g/20g turbos and possibly even DOM XT turbos. Ill have a friend bring his Dom 3 with 3" inlet by to test fit it this week. Its currently out of his car.

Wow, that was fast. If it's even capable of fitting a dom xt that is even better news! Then I can plan on keeping it for a while once I do upgrade the turbo.

Nice work man

Well kids, I got a hold of the Dom 1.5 XTR today for fitment..... IT FITS!!

*The compressor being a 3" inlet on this turbo makes the inlets direct path somewhat blocked by about an inch. So this means if you have an older WRX or STi with the metal coolant res, you will have to buy the plastic res from the 06-12. It is much smaller and would work just fine for stock location. Or you can relocate the metal res over to the fender or some place else!

The turbo has plenty of clearance elsewhere, if you bought a Dom with a 2.4 inlet it would fit just as a VF39 or TD04 would with no modification to the coolant res.

*Dom XTR 1.5 with 10cm housing and 3" inlet housing.

Nice work!

Now you just need to fab up a downpipe for it along with the necessary coolant/oil lines and you have a marketable rotated conversion kit. I'm thinking it would be something like the TurboXS rotated kit, minus the EWG, and flanged for the stock turbo instead of the T31 turbine housing.

Sweeeet, I'm liking this more each time I come back!

I'll send you my down pipe if you want to modify it for me to test with this setup.

It would work out great for me, because I'm not gonna be able to drive the car anywhere to have an exhaust shop do it without a down pipe on.

I'll pay you too of course. Please let me send it to you

Haha Ill think about that. Ill probably have to set it up on my DD or My wagon if it doesnt sell this weekend. Once the First REAL adapter is done and bolted down, Ill mess with my down pipe and get it running on one of my cars. If its all a go, then game on! and ill pump these things out. They wont take long to weld up now that the Jig is made. Im guessing the down pipe will need to be cut in 2 places and 1 extension will need to be inserted. Other than that it all seems to be going smooth.

Ill clear one engine off a stand later today and get some better pictures of it with a EWG Up pipe.

BTW, I also made the EWG bracket for the Dom turbo in the picture!! Havent seen anyone else making those to fit them that I am aware of. Ive got the template for that too.

Re routing oil and coolant lines, modding the dp, and making it work with the stock tmic is the reason I haven't installed mine yet
