Better oil control.

The 2.0 pan is a flat bottom pan.
The 2.5 pan is more shaped like a deep sump pan
More oil stays around the pick-up with the 2.5 pan

The internal baffle on the 2.0 pan restricts oil return to the pick-up
The internal baffle on the 2.5 pan is more open and oil returns faster to the pick-up

GreAt info on those threads. But being as i only have to flat 2.0 oil pan, my concerns were there compatibility. I thought if i used 2.0 block > use 2.0 pan. Ej257 block >257 oil pan..

All EJ blocks have the exact same oil pan bolt pattern. Everything is cross compatible, but you need to keep in mind changing the pan will need the coresponding pickup and baffle too.

if you dont have a good oil pickup you should change it while its out. The factory one is weak. Get the Killer B one!

Correct, but it doesn't matter because you are going to use the 2.5 pan with the KillerB Ultimate Oil Pick-up!

and get the 06+ STi pan, not the 05 STi pan. It has a better design

Or

Cosworth is a modified OEM pan. They have moving parts, only allow the use of very few aftermarket headers, among many other reasons why we developed our own performance/race pan.

If you don't track more than occasionally, stick with the 2.5 pan.

off topic..but is the 2.0L oil pickup long enough to utilize the 2.5L pan? I recall the 2.5L pan is slightly deeper from a post. Not sure if that has been verified.

No, and it's a worse pickup to use. Stay away from open bottom pickups, They will funnel oil, long before the other designs.

thanks for the quick reply, i plan to swap both in the future. I've never head of failures of the 2.0L pickup but more from the lack of pickup from the 2.0L pans when oil sloshes around.

I'm pretty sure the engine sharted on mine because of this.

I had a 2.0 pan with the double baffles. Brand new engine, freshly built.

The older 2.0 pickups fail just like the newer ones. The oldest model we've had experience with was from a 1997. Oil slosh isn't a concern on the street, and on track it's fairly rare for a typical street car, but certainly more prevalent than with the 2.5 pan design.

What is the intended use for this car? That will make pan selection a lot easier here.

So most likely no slosh issues on 2.0 pan if not pushed to limits on track?

mine is typically on the street but plan to do more strip again.
Maybe i'm missing the reports of the 2.0L pickup failures on the board, i thought its rare. However aware and witnessed blown 2.0L motors both USDM/JDM blocks due to high g situations, i.e. roadcourse, donuts.
As far as the 2.5L pickups failures, i do know of them cracking where they are brazed.

It depends on the track a lot too, but the OEM 2.0 pan is a good street pan. I personally wouldn't run a 2.0 pan with any seriousness on a road coarse, it's just not worth the risk.

Strip as in straight line?

The 2.0 pickup failures are harder to dig up. Remember, most of the forums where this data is very easy to find, were in thier infancy ~10 years ago. You need to dig a bit far and wide. Specifically where the WRX existed 10 years before they were available here in the US, where there was a good enthusiast following too (Europe, Australia, etc...).

Details on why the pickups fail can be found IN THIS LINK.

and pictures of broken pickups HERE.
