Default Cheap EJ25 Build

I know any build isn't "cheap" per se, but what all could you do to beef up the engine with $2000? Excluding turbos, due to baaaad insurance, and minor bolt ons like CAI's. Just throwing it out there, please don't reply "just save your money and spend more on it later", because even if I did have the money, I would use it towards college. I would be doing the build, not a mechanic so that saves some money (right?)

Thanks,

Denny

If your are not going to turbo it, nothing needs to be "beefed" up.

but wouldnt you make more horsepower with new cams, crank, pistons, etc? Or would you have to machine the cylinders and get oversized pistons to make power. How can I get more power with 2000 bucks w/o a turbo?

i myself have a 2.5 rs, i have minor bolt ons, exhaust, short ram intake, and a lightened pulley, and wondering what else i can do keeping it n/a. Also i have a question that someone with some extended knowledge in subarus could answer. I was wondering if you could put a block from one of the subaru suv's or the legacy into a impreza to make it a 3.0l or higher, just like how they do with some civics they put the b20 (crv) block into it to make it a 2.0l. anyway could this be done to make give the impreza more potential to be a fast n/a car. and please save your time if you are just going to give me a rough time for wanting a n/a subaru. thanks

You can make much more (but not huge) with cams, intake exhaust, and so forth, but you asked about "beefing up".

Look/search in the NA section because thats where the answers lie....

Don't forget a piggy back to do some tuning with those mods!

Thank you reddevil, you answered my question correctly in the first reply, I just misworded it, sorry. I like Foxz question about putting a different block on it, so if anybody knows about that, that would be cool. And what do you mean by a much more (but not huge) power increase? I don't want a subie with 400hp if thats what you mean by 'huge'. Thanks again reddevil, I will try searching through that messy NA section to find more out about stuff besides Cai's and exhausts.

Thanks,

Denny

You CAN but it is going to be a lot of work. Here in DFW we have 3 BRP 2.5 RSes and I'm doing a crazy EJ22t stroker build (with lots of boost). One is working on a EJ257 swap, and my best friend who is working on an EZ30R swap. He has the engine and really the mounts are similar enough to fabricate. At minimum you need to remove/relocated fans/AC condenser. Then lots of fabrication for the third engine mount, and to get everything working. "Stock" JDM ecu won't really work there is too much security stuff to bypass. Also we have a fair bit of concern that with 250 or so ft/lbs of torque at the low end you will snap a gear on the transmission. AFAIK there are only 1 or 2 GC H6 swaps and I'm sure all of them had to have a fair bit of fabrication work done. If you want to go down that route I'm sure It'll be fun, but certainly a lot of work.

haha yeah i see what your saying but thanks alot, that gives me a bit clearer idea of what to do. but one more question, if i did do put a block in from one of the other subarus they wouldnt be geared for acceleration i would imagine so would that just require a different ecu or transmission.... sorry if i just sound stupid im a bit new into the whole mod world.

I'm not sure about a 05 RS but certainly the 00/01 Transmission is geared for a surprisingly quick acceleration. As far as geared for acceleration your fine. The engine still spins at roughly the same RPM ranges, just depends on how quickly they can get there. Of course our concern is that the torque will be so huge, and quick the transmission will break very easily, and we are looking into a STI 6sp swap due to the much larger gears. ECU you would definitely need an entirely new one. There are so many differences in sensors, number of injectors, individual coil packs etc. I will elaborate on the engine mounts. There are 3 engine mounts on the EZ30R. 2 in the rear (much like the EJ mounts), and we think it might be possible to use an EJ mount for the rear. However, there is a third engine mount on the center that we are not so sure about. This would require fabrication to put a third mount there. We have measured this and the H6 is only about 1.5" longer in depth as the EJ engine (mostly due to very creative placement of sensors on front and the rear of the block, EJ engines are mostly on front). So it will definitely fit in the engine, bay but fans, AC Condenser, etc would have to be removed/relocated.

But this is pretty advanced stuff when it comes to modding. Certainly it would be a massive task to do this kind of mod first. Try some bolt ons first. It's a lot easier to do and a heck of a lot cheaper.
