Default Jacksonville MOD Squad #4

The last page of Mod 3 has this question:

Hey y'all - don't mean to chime on y'alls thread. I just recently purchased some goodies for my Subie, but have no knowledge on how to install things that are performance mods. I usually have my brother install things and i just assist and watch to learn. I don't know who can help, but I thought I'd try you guys. Here are the things I bought:

Lo-tek A-pillar gauge pod
Autometer Ultra Lite series gauges (Boost, EGT, and Air/Fuel guages)
BoostMonkey
Blitz Dual Turbo Timer
MIL Eliminator

Have you all had experience with these installs? My brother and I could probaly do most of these together, but I thought it would be cool to meet up with some of you guys. Also, seems like that the EGT gauge install will be the worst since I have a Godspeed uppipe and no EGT bung. I think the rest of the stuff will be ok, but maybe you guys could just install all of these in a short time. Since you all meet in Jax, it'll be somewhat of a drive for me, but I think it would be worth it if I knew people with experience are installing everything. I'll be out of town until July 12th, so I don't know if that'll make it hard to decide if anyone could help me or not. Anyways, if anyone could help do all of the installs, please let me know...I'm more than willing to drive to have someone who is qualified to do the installs. BTW - how much would you guys charge a brother for all this?

Performance Mods so far:

Godspeed Uppipe
MRT Full Turbo Back
MRT CAI

Please let me know if anyone can help. Thank y'all. Look forward to meeting some of y'all. Even if you can't help with install - maybe offer up some tips?

Lets go from here with another thread for the Mod Squad.

BTW the day was good, Jay's leak is fixed, Justin got everything installed, the inlet pipe sucked, and Dave drank beer

On to our next event,

The Jacksonville Mod Squad

P.S. Yes Jay, I beat you to it

Although not enough. Too busy working on other peoples cars. I worked on cars for about 13 hours or so and never did get to change my oil.

Jay, what's the report on the car for the ride over to work? Feel good? Still seems quiet?

Yes Shaun, you beat me to it.. sigh.

Dave, it's completely AWESOME. Not a single sound.. Ultra smooth and quiet the whole time. Thank you guys SO MUCH for the help. You don't know how much better that makes me feel. =)

Well, as far as for the next meet.. I don't have anything yet, unless you guys wanna help me install speakers.. then I suppose I could wait until I go over there. =) That counts as a mod right?

I recieve my Greddy catback on Monday, and i'll be installing this right away.. as i'll be TOO excited to wait. Who's got what to install?

Justin's WRX is bad arse!

Hank - we are very familiar with everything you listed. We get together, help each other out, and sometimes do installs for out of town guests. We don't charge an hourly fee, but we do like to eat and drink.

When's the next meeting? Lets see how the next 2 weeks go and who collects what to install.

I'll be in Daytona for the Races next weekend

I just got back from a speed run with the Wagon:

The Inlet pipe makes the turbo noises a little louder and the power delivery seems smoother. Plus no problems with running lean.

The rear sway bar really locked the back down. Between the springs and swaybars, my body roll has been dramatically reduced. Now its time for some driving lessons from Rich before I attempt AutoX anything.

A side note, my ghetto intake temp gauge works like a champ. Not as fast as the Autometer temp things, but it works. More to follow after a few days of watching it.

I got home safe and sound. Thanks again guys!

The car is running really well. I suspicious noise I noticed before (that I dismissed originally) is not there anymore; I'm guessing it was the head gasket leak all along.

Man, I'm SO glad I went up there, not only was it very fun/educational, but I never would have known about that leak!

I am l33tz0r mechanic now! bwahaha!

Default Cool!!!

Hey y'all - thanks for the reassurance of helping me out. Like I said though, I won't be back in town (Tallahassee) until July 12 (Friday), so the earliest we could do it is that Saturday (13th). Will I need to bring anything? My biggest concern is not having an EGT bung on my uppipe. How are you guys going to install the probe for the EGT gauge? Do I need to have a muffler shop weld on a bung? Anyways, I hope I don't have too many things to install for y'all. I'll be bringing my brother so we could definitely assist in all that we can. You guys could just tell us what to do and we'll do the physical labor. As long as we know what we're doing, I think we'll be ok. So with that being said, please shoot me some questions if there are any as far as what I'll need to bring when we meet up (ie: screws, tubing, and etc...). I'm sure as time goes on, you guys will come up with a time to meet so others can have things installed too. It'll be no problem buying you guys food and drinks, but just a heads up to y'all - I don't really drink alcohol. But, that doesn't mean I won't have fun with y'all - I'll get whatever you guys want to eat and stuff (within reason of course) - no fancy foods which I doubt is the appropriate food for getting together anyways. So let me know about when we can get together and I hope to have all of these mods in soon!!! Thanks y'all - look forward to keeping in touch with you guys and eventually meeting up...

The MRT Turbo Back is sweet!!! Sounds great (meaning it's not too loud which is what I want), but it definitely does not have that polished stainless steel look like the ones you usually see. Very sleeper looking. But like they advertise on MRT - it's functional, it works, with no frills...

Hank,

Shaun (Sparks) installs the EGT probes into the passenger side of the header, between cylinder 1 and 3.. it gets the best of both worlds.

Having an EGT in the uppipe wouldn't be near accurate enough to assume what's safe and what's not.

Tacos and wings man, tacos and wings. Just don't treat this like a business, we do this stuff for fun, just some guys getting together on weekends having fun turning wrenches. And a disclaimer: we warranty our work for 30 seconds after ignition or .5 miles, whichever comes first. j/k

Don't get the probe that needs to be welded on and it's a piece of cake. It's easy to drill through the cast iron manifold (on whichever cylinder you want) and Shaun has a handy-dandy tap that happens to be the perfect size for the Autometer probes.

Mmmm, Mobil 1 synthetic is nice! Glad I made the change, feels smooth. Probably because it's thicker, 20w50. I guess the higher rating is good for the hot Florida summer.

If anyone wants to do tranny fluid with me, I just ordered Redline fluid from Summit Racing, and they actually had it in stock! Get 4qts of this for the tranny and 1qt of this for the rear diff. Or whatever other fluid you want, just thought you might be interested in my find.
Lata,
Dave

BTW, here's a pic of that nasty-ass leak that Justin had on his manifold-to-block joint: (Jay's looked eerily similar...)

Cool - sounds like a plan. So would all my mods be a fairly easy to install and would it be really time consuming? Don't really want to be a pain - seeing how I'm an outsider in sorts with me being an out of towner and all. If tacos and wings is all y'all want, then I'm game for that. I can eat with the best of them, but milk on the rocks for me

Sounds like a great warranty plan you guys got going on there. What do you expect for wings, tacos, and booze? Sure, get the poor guy to sign the warranty papers when he has eaten all that food and drank all that much - on the verge of vomiting and you guys come up and say, "Hey we need you to sign off on our warranty."

I'm countin' down till I get these stinkin mods are installed...

Hank, just remember one thing, the amount of beer, wings, and tacos ingested is directly proportionate to the quality of work those guys do, so be ready to cough it up!

Quality of work = Q
B = Amount of beer
T = Amount of tacos
W = Amount of wings
G = Hotness of Girlfriend that comes along

Q = (.9999xB + .00005T + .00005W)/(B+T+W) + 10xG

As you can see, Q is weighted more heavily towards G followed by B, with T and W having equal, but much smaller weights.

To expound on Dave's definition:

Justin buys beers, wings and tacos. Shows up without a Girlfriend and his Q is less than 1.

Jay on the other hand brings NOTHING and his Q is 100 when LeAnn comes with him

Dave rework the formula. A good Q should involve 24 beers, 50-75 wings, 10-20 late night tacos, then factor in Hotness.

Okay okay, how's this one for you?

Q = 3(B/24) + 2(W/50) + 2(T/20) + 2G

Where G is a whole number on a scale from 1 to 10.

Example - show up with 24 beers, buy 20 tacos, no girlfriend:
Q = 3 + 0 + 2 + 0 = 5 not too bad, we'll fix an up-pipe leak if we create it

However, let's see what happens when you buy 48 beers, 100 wings, 40 tacos, and bring Natalie Portman:
Q = 6 + 4 + 4 + 18 = 32 --> You are one cool d00d! We will lick the dirt off the under side of your car for you if you so desire.

This is the most productive Monday ever!

Now we're getting some where with the formula.

Natalie is not a 9, more like a 4 (Budwiser scale).

I have got 2 CEL after the inlet install. I did a reset on Sunday and it came back today. I stopped by AutoZone to see what the code was and "Zippy the counter geek" cleared all the codes before he read them. I guess I'll drive around for a bit and get the code back.

I found someone to do the 4 wheel alignment. I went back to a Mom & Pop shop I've used before and Friday morning I'll be set.

The 13th or 20th of this month is fine with me, but whatever is most convenient for y'all is cool with me. All y'all's equations are hilarious. I'll just wind up getting you guys a whole bunch of Slim Jims and Jolt Cola!!!

[To Justin, in best Nelson voice]: Ha ha.

A CEL from the inlet pipe? Hmm, sounds fishy. Too bad Jeffy the counter leech cleared the code, otherwise it'd be simple to diagnose.
