Get a 3" stainless down pipe and put an eletric cutout on it. Bolt assembly to stock exhuast. case closed. And it'd be cheaper than building a full 3" exhuast with 2-3 drilled/louvered core mufflers and 1 big boy muffler. And alot lighter to boot.

Finally got my custom 3.5" TBE done (not by me, have a good fabricator!), necks down to 3" at the diff. It's tucked up as far as it can go and I'm surprised how well it turned out for a 3.5" system. The cat's in the dump as it fits really nicely there but being a 3.5" 100cel 5" body it shouldn't be much restriction at all. Will hopefully fire the car up mid week when I've finished the other bits and pieces as it's a fresh build. Can't wait to hear the damn thing!

Anyway, on to some pics....

While I'm whoring pics, turbos an ATP GTX3076 but with a 4" comp cover. The 0.72A/R ATP turbine should be big enough. Still had to get a custom dump fabbed and a CNC'd up pipe adaptor to lift and slightly rotate the turbo.

CNC'd adaptor:

Turbo and intake, 3.5" to filter

I am looking to build a setup similar to this. Can anyone here eyeball those bends? (looking at pic #4) Starting at the bottom of the downpipe it is fairly straight then is the first and second bends 60's or 45's? and then when it splits into 2, what are each of those? I figured it would be easier to pick up some bends rather than pie cut!

Thanks in adavnce!

-Chris

After i got on road , seems like car pulls harder - specialy in 2nd and 3rd gear.
So down pipe is next mod, i might do it myself as well (machine shop next door have a water jet cutter - so they can make me a flange for turbo side)

3in Sprung slip-fit for my STi, the slip-fit is twisted a little bit, the bends are left/right not up and down.

3in 304 into a 18in Magnaflow on SPL's Time Attack Z. he wanted it as high as possible for the eventual undertray, which is why it ducks up after the diff and goes into bendy section. made 2 more horsepower than the straight pipe so whatever. haha.

Sch 10 Up-pipe for a Customers 6262 Turbo, still in progress at the time.

a 2in 20ga (.035) wall 321 Stainless dumptube for my STi, used some tubing I had left over from my motorcycle exhaust to build this guy, hoping it sounds awesome.

Has anyone replaced a muffler with just a resonator on a stock exhaust set up? Any thoughts on how the sound would turn out?

The hard part is the somewhat expensive welding equipment. $2500 for a decent TIG welder that can do about anything. MIG wire-feed is much cheaper. <$1000
FWIW, it is somewhat dirty, hot, yet meticulous work, if you do it well. Wearing leathers and helmet without the fun of riding the bike...

As to the previous question, I virtually have resonators (dual 3"ID mufflers that you can see straight through), on my STi at the exit of my Turbo XS 3" exhaust system and it is loud! Might get stopped and ticketed/might not. I thought they would be illegal at the track (EMRA TT), but they were not questioned.

Murphdog that exhaust is really nice! Must bark a little
Question for everyone: How many people run totally catless systems?
Obviously its not legal (I wont tell), but I am curious how many DDs are running catless, if any?
I am thinking about custom exhaust parts and was wondering if cats get left out
Thanks

rotated GT3076R,
3" everything
zero cats,
dual TiAl 38mm wastegates,
external dump tubes.

mufflers straight thru but its actually a stainless OEM resonator from a VW. its actually quite quiet. its all stainless with a perforated tube inside and muffler packing. its 100% daily driven and ive never had a single complaint from passengers or police about noise. its under the legal limit. you can actually have a normal conversation in there. until the gates open. lol.

Pidgeon thanks for the input.
And Loomin, sounds like a sweet system. Could you explain the dual gates a little bit?
I am hoping to get a wrx or sti soon. But I am thinking of custom designing and building a switchable-bypass exhaust system. I want to be able to physically or mechanically switchable between a legal system (cats a mufflers) and a low restiction, loud system.
Didn't know if there would be any interest outisde of my own lol?
Thanks to all that respond in advance

there are many people who have put electronic cut-out's in their exhaust in this thread search back a couple of pages, most likely that is what you want..

Thats a Vibrant 9in resonator. It does absolutely nothing but occasionally the rulebook says you have to have a muffler. so I put it on there.

If you want something that works, the Magnaflow 5in round body sounds real nice on about anything I've put it on.

3in 2011 STi Downpipe with a Vibrant 'ultra-quiet' resonator. Sounds pretty good with that magnaflow catback on it.

Have you used the 18" vibrant resonator with the 9" race muffler? that's what i'm building now...

cheers
