Default Flashback: Subaru Super GT 2004

Flashback to 2004: Subaru Super GT at Cal Speedway

While going through drives recent we found our video masters for the 2004 GT LIVE event in Southern California. This event brought together Japanese D1 and Super GT (JGTC back then) for the first time on American soil. We were lucky to get our cameras into the Cusco Subaru Super GT car. That sound! If you were there, chime into this thread with your recollections from the event.

And yes, this is a video edit that is a decade old - a time before GoPro cameras and aerial drones. We were still shooting on standard definition tapes back then!

Good stuff!

I never got into the GT cars much back then, but since STi has been running the BRZ GT car as well as the Nurburgring WRX's, I find it incredible.

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for sharing!

I have some pics of JGTC races from 2004 I got off Dieselstation at the time. I don't remember if they were from this event or another in the series, have to go back and check.

Just added a second video from the GT LIVE archive:
http://www.drivingsports.com/v2/gt-live-phoenix-2006/

This one was produced in 2006. No JGTC this time, instead GRAND AM was the main event. Also, some footage of the Gravel Crew Rallycross.

This was an AMAZING event! They said they were going to comeback the next year and never did again. I remember this event as if it happen yesterday. I went with my 4 of my cousins who were all fans of JGTC which is now called SuperGT. With general admission I was able to sit anywhere and look inside the garages up close and personal with the GT cars taking pictures of what I only seen in Gran Turismo... lol

It was epic, in terms of models, cars, race cars, GT cars everything. The Most fun race/car event I have ever gone too. I think only F1 can match the experience. It was nice because no one was telling you what you can or not do. Basically I had access everywhere and also test drove cars as well. The Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX8 which just debut around that time and were allowed to test drive them through cones/slalom for free. Never been to event where so much access was granted. Epic!

I witnessed great racing, drifting which was just getting popular in US. The fact that all these Japanese people were there in the paddock made it seem like I was in Fuji watching the race but instead I was in SUNNY Fontana Speedway then now called AUTOCLUB Speedway.
Just like the OP said. We didnt have Go Pros nor the best type of cameras than... even camera phones sucked.
I still have over 100 pictures of this event. Simply amazing...I'm glad you posted this OP. Great memories forever. I hope they comeback.
It defiantly was a success here in the US.

Cheers.

What a fun event, had the opportunity to have HPI driver drive my rally car. In return got some hot lap rides in his JGTC car!

Interesting, looks like the hood scoop is very obviously fake in some of the GT pictures. FMIC setup but had to look like a subi!

Standard Def in it's glory (interlacing and all) Thanks for sharing. Some pretty great camera work for 2004.
And don't feel about about this video being SD. Some clients still ask for it today. Not all markets are up to par with HD standards today.
