No source...or real article, but F1Times on twitter says "Kubica put into coma, might be woken tomorrow. Expecting an update from doctor at 8:30 (GMT) on Monday." This is what I hate about twitter, its great to get info...but use actual sources so its not like what happened with Massa two years ago when random **** was posted which turned out to be untrue.

That is "real" tarmac rallying - and it's actually pretty hardcore, especially when you have an off.
IMO this kind of falls in the "freak accident" category - just in rallying there are alot more freak accidents because of the terrain and other uncontrolled variables. Terrible injuries, I hope they succeeed long term in saving his arm/hand. -C |

The fact that came through the car that way and no one was killed is a miracle in itself...
Has anyone seen a pic of how/where it came into the car? Angle almost makes me think the car popped up a bit and it went straight in near the footwell/exhaust tunnel or somewhere near the firewall. |

The scariest **** ever. I suppose hes lucky to be alive after that. Hope nothing gets amputated. I gather it will be hard for him to get back into racing after wards. Speedy recovery to him.

I've seen insinuations that the guard rail section was not joined to the previous one, and he slid along the "previous" one during the crash until he encountered this new piece, which pierced the car. In North America, guard rails are overlapped so that this can't happen - it's nigh-impossible to find two pieces that just end at one another and aren't joined by at least some kind of gusset plate. Looks like either this one didn't have such a join, or it had disappeared. Guard rails are designed to "give", of course, but not break, and rely on the entire length of rail assembly to stay together. So the first section of rail "gave", and let him go a little off-course as it slowed him. Then, he came upon this new section of rail that wasn't attached to the first one, and was thus standing there bare-ended right in his path.
It theoretically could be blamed on improper maintenance of the guard rails - IF the Italian design is similar to North America, where they all must be joined. Having said that, it could also be argued that the road designers/maintainers weren't planning on having high-speed race cars on their roads, so it wasn't necessary to build in such redundant protection. |
