I think The Jerk and Dirty Rotten Scoundrals would probably be his best work. But, as a youngster I would listen to his Wild and Crazy Stand Up and I thought it was excellent. That being said, you have a point with Murray and Chase.

Why did you pick an unrelated title that is an old joke that no one uses anymore if you wanted people to come in and talk about Steve Martin? If you wanted to make a point about a good comedian, you could have used one of these threads: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=336713 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...php?p=11088611 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1075550 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1996907 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show....php?t=1257459 Last edited by kgb4187; 03-24-2013 at 04:04 AM. |

I think the problem a lot of comedians have is transferring their humour from stand-up to TV and/or to film. Some "comic genius'" are "comic genius'" live on stage but their "comic genius'" falls flat on TV or film. Conversely, some "comic genius'" are "comic genius'" on TV or film but their "comic genius'" falls flat live. Very few "comic genius'" are "comic genius'" live and "comic genius'" on TV or film. A lot of it has to do with their improvisational skills vs. their acting ability. On the stage they need to improvise. On film they need to follow the script. TV can be either improvisation or scripted.
I think Steve Martin was a great improvisor so he was very entertaining on stage or on live TV, but I think he was a second rate actor so he was not very entertaining on scripted TV or film. People who didn't see him live or on SNL or other improvisational TV shows probably have a skewed view of his talent. |

I was sitting at home, peeking through the blinds at my neighbor's wife, minding my own business, when my doorbell rang. "Who's there?" I shouted. "We don't know," came the reply. I immediately knew the dopes had come over. I opened the door and invited them in. I was happy to have company even if they were a bunch of dopes.
'Well, what brings you over this way?" I queried. "Yup." "Yup." "Yup." "Yup." they said. "Would you like some coffee?" I asked. "Gol," said one dope, "how long have we been here?" "About two minutes." "Gol, we should have left hours ago!" And they packed up some of my things and lumbered out. "Goodbye Dopes!" I shouted. They turned to me and shouted back, "Goodbye, you big ****in' idiot!" |

Steve Martin said that if the "Wild and Crazy Guy" thing hadn't worked he would have taken the step that Andy Kaufman took in the progression of finding an act that people would pay to see.

There are two Steve Martins. The first is the dorky, endearing, goofball from The Jerk and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I like that guy.
The other Steve Martin is the dorky, endearing, sensitive goofball from LA Story, Roxanne, and It's Complicated. I hate that ****er. |
