Project: Wide 5 (WRX Wagon) Presented by IAG Performance
Project: WIDE 5 Pictures updated 06/11/2008: See Page 9 for the latest shots, fitted with some new wheels, and some MEATY 255/35/18's!!! I thought to share with the community a project we are undertaking at IAG. We have often discussed at our shop why did Subaru not place the WRX flares on the Wagon? Others have completed the work in the past, some good, some not so much, some steel, and some well you know. There is not really anything innovative about it, but one of our staff members wanted a flared WRX Wagon anyway. He picked up a 2002 WRX wagon a couple months ago for a steal. It didn't have any collision damage but was rough around the edges and was a great candidate for the conversion. I ordered all new WRX rear quarters, 06 front fenders, hood, bumper and radiator support. I had a few rear WRX doors lying around and donated them to the project. We held the rear quarters skins up to the car and realized it was possible to do the project but it would be best left to professional body man to undertake. We called our local Auto Body Shop and consulted with them. We played with a cut up quarter of one of our wrecks out back. The Auto Body Shop we use does great work in a timely fashion, which can be tough to find in this industry. Most body guys don't want to touch a project like this and after all it's easier to do the bread and butter insurance work, but they considered the job, said they would do it and let us know when the time was right. A few months passed (they were busy), almost thought they were avoiding the project but then the call came in to get it down to the body shop. We put the WRX rear doors on to the car and realized the glass had to be changed out. With the sedan glass on a wagon there is a 1" gap with the window rolled all the way up. It turns out, you can use the sedan doors and regulators but you have to use the wagon rear door glass for proper fitment to the molding and roofline. So with the doors on, it was easy to see how much the rear WRX quarters were going to make a difference on the car. We dropped the car off on Friday February 22nd in the evening and on Monday morning the quarters were sawed off and the new quarters mocked into place. This is were is gets sort of interesting, the cars owner wanted to save the Wagon tail light buckets and additionally did not want the "extra" lip that is created near the bucket area. If you have seen other wagon projects you know what I'm talking about. He likes the look of the 04-05 STI rear quarters and tail lamps where the lip is not so visible (the tail light covers up some of the upper flare). He can't just buy tail lights to make that happen so the body shop had to form the metal to that contour. (He knows some people will like this and others will not, but of course it's his car). Our body guys then went about trimming and tacking the quarters into place rechecking door alignment and body lines. You start to get a real perspective now that the wagon can fit wheels larger that 9" wide. So with everything going pretty smooth it was time to set the rear bumper cover in place. The old one was not worth using so a new one was delivered and mockup began. The interesting thing about the wagon in contrast to the sedan is the main upper body line and outer wheel arches align however the rear bumper belt line is different. This meant that the rear belt line of the quarter must be sectioned upward and dollied to fit the contour of the rear bumper cover. This meant more cutting and tacking, checking fitment etc. Needless to say they got the rear bumper cover to fit. And they finished welding the seams of quarters onto the body. Simultaneously they begin painting the hood, fenders door handles etc. Ten days into the project, some body work still lies ahead. They are currently finish sanding the rear quarters and are in the process of finishing the 06 radiator support conversion. The goal is to have the car back the end of next week so we can start fitment for wheels and suspension. Not sure what is in the immediate plans for drive train mods, but next year we have plans for an STI driveline conversion. I guess we will have to wait and see. DAY 0 DAY 1 Day #2 Day #3

Glad to see someone tackling this with a full understanding on what will take to make it look correct in the end. Always wondered why they didnt make the wagons with rear flares. |

I like it but for me i think the color is throwing off the look. Or maybe its the wheels? Probably looks way better in person.
