Default Lunched a rotor this weekend.

Let me tell you that is an interesting experience.
First let me tell you the warning signs were there. The rotor wasn't exactly new.
I mistook the noise for a warped rotor or severe pad buildup. I had inspected it before hand and did not see any cracks. I had obviously left the track before my brakes had cooled, and some how must have created a hot spot, as the noise was immediate on the next run. I parked it for the day. Went to the parts store, got new rotors. Went to change them and the bolts holding on the carrier just wouldn't budge, and I couldn't get good leverage on them anyway. I figured I'll just sand the old rotors for now. That seemed to solve the problem for the most part. I figured it was a pad buildup issue.
It didn't surprise me when the noise came back the next day....just figured it was the pad building up again.
Went into the chicane on the warm up lap, and it let go. Went into the grass and didn't touch my brakes......a little while later, some serious clunks and I'm stopped. Half of the disc got left on the track. Other half was stuck in the caliper. The hat was separated from the rest.
Fortunately, The only real damage was the rotor and the wheel got scratched up....the wheel was just a curbrashed wrx rim anyway...so it didn't make it any uglier. Luckily, it didn't take out the brake line, caliper or pads.

Managed to get the carrier loose and the new rotor on there...only to find out that it was the the correct subaru rotor. It was about a quarter inch too small in diameter. Had to use it anyway to get me home. Seem to work ok, although I doubt it will be good for the pad.

Anyways, just thought I'd share. I have video and pictures that I'll upload tonight.

Bottom line, loud brake noise is bad m'kay. Use your head and this won't happen to you

Did I also mention how much I dislike the hankooks compared to the azenis?

I want to guess the brand.

I bet they have something to do with racing and also with brakes.

TECHnically, their name has something to do with STOPing.

Truthfully, the rotor was old and well worn. It was slotted and the slots were nearly worn off.
I'm not going to blame the rotor. The symptoms were there.

Barely a track.
Saint Lawrence motorsports park.
3/4 mile road course, designed for go-karts. My club runs it as a fast autox.
Very hard on brakes. As a few of the turns are 180°.
Its a fun place as there are no walls to worry about.
High 70's is about as fast as anyone will go in the straights.
Some pics that someone else took.

And you'll find that SLMP is harder on brakes than most tracks. You have about 3-5 fairly hard braking points in a less than lap 60 second lap. Glad it wasn't worse than it was.

yep,
Not my first time there. We go about twice a year for the last 5+ years.
My second time with the subaru...used the audi or mini previously.

We now run a warm up lap, 3 timed laps, and a cool down. The blue wagon in the pic had oem brakes and was smoking them by the time he left the track after his runs.

I'm running carbotech panther plus, and its better suited. However, I think it might have got hung up somehow on the run previous to noticing the warpage/pad buildup.

It is very tough on brakes and tough on the front left tire. Any cars above 2100lbs need to run a tire about 80 treadwear, as the weight of the car was causing the track surface to accordion. You'll also notice the track has been patched in a few spots which is very rough on the tires.

Funny, we never crossed paths.
I missed that one because my mini was broken, and the audi had control arm issues.
Nick with the Europa is an excellent driver. His Europa has been down for the last year with a rebuild. Its going to be down right scary fast when it comes back.
We had a few people in 58's and one hit 56 this time around. Track seemed slower this time around.

I'll attest to the "sound" of a rotor cleaving itself in half at 60mph. I was past the timing tent and heading to the "john" when I head it let go. Sachmo did a great job at keeping it all together and out of the pond.

BTW, thats me in the yellow X-1/9.

On further inspection it looks like the carrier bracket got bent. Its rubbing on the rotor. So the car is grounded for now.
I know the 02 wrxs have different calipers within the model year. Is the carrier bracket the same regardless of caliper?

I'll ask in the brake forum as well.

Um, a brake rotor doesn't wear out there. How are your slide pins on the caliper? Sticky or stuck? Something caused a fatigue failure there. Somebody should at the very least be sending you a free set of rotors IMO.

Pins are fine.

Forgot to mention that it was pointed to me, the rust on the hat. It should be all freshly twisted metal. However, there is rust there indicating the hat had a pre-existing problem.
If you look at the picture you can see it.

Fortunately, one of my area dealers had a bracket even though they don't normally stock it. So whomever ordered one and didn't pick it up....thank you.
I sent an email to the rotor maker to see what their response is.

Well it wasn't the bracket/carrier. Put that on this morning. Looks like the whole hub assembly/knuckle whatever the hell you want to call it is bent enough to throw off the carrier. This blows. Hope I can fix it by this sunday's autocross.
I picked up a used assembly from a local pick and pull this morning.
