You probably "feel" second gear is crunchy because you noticed the extra milage and started looking for something wrong.

Op if you think thats bad, the body shop owners son was joy riding in my car, my friend approached asked him what hes doing in the car, he came up with some bs excuse. When i got the car back not only did they do a ****ty job but it had more body damage than when i dropped it off. Insurance didn't do anything so I traded that car in real fast.

There's been a handful of times when I would take my car to body shops and even dealerships for estimates and see techs, mechanics, shop workings taking customers cars around the corner to grab parts quickly. I'm sure they weren't "extreme valet parking style" their car but using customers cars for quick pick-ups is a big no-no. I'm also very paranoid about leaving my car at any shop that I'm not familiar with. If I did, I'd hook up my GoPro with it's 8 hour battery pack and a 64 gig SD card suctioned cup to my rear window and set to take a photo every 30 seconds til the job is done.

Not trying to say that bad things don't happen when you drop a car off at a shop but some of you guys are hilariously paranoid

My wagon has a hidden switch that rev-limits the engine to <3,000 RPM.

Leave a note on steering wheel that says "I'm watching the mileage, if it changes, I will find you, I will kill you, and then sue your corpse"

Sounds like the car was sitting in the cold for longer than you are used to. If I leave the car outside vs a garage, 2nd gear feels nasty until it warms up, and gas reads a bit lower. 2 miles isn't much of a joyride. 20 I'd be concerned.

I manage a body shop. We work on everything from beaters to Twin Turbo Lambos and everything in between. If you are worried about 2 miles you need to just relax a bit. We test drive every car to make sure its not making wind noises or anything else. Most shops who are high quality do this also. We don't want to get out and pound on your car because we don't want to pay to fix it. Just take a deep breath and everything will be ok.

On the rare occasions I bring my vehicles in for work, I make sure the mileage is marked on the ppwk and if a test drive isn't necessarily appropriate or needed for the work being performed, I make sure I ask about it and request that they don't. Obviously, I can see the chances of this occurring with some cars more than others. For example, Im not as concerned about this problem occuring with our Scion or my wife's Forester although anything is possible. ....oh, and I never valet any of our cars if I can help it. |

The owner of a body shop I used once went for a drive in my wrx... on a donut spare. I went by and saw my car wasn't there, so I pulled in to see why. While I was waiting for it to show back up, the owner of the shop pulls in screeching the tires. He jumped out and said, "man, that thing is fast for a 4 banger." He had taken it to get lunch.
p.s. They are no longer in business. |

Dude, chill. Your too ANAL. Mashing the throttle 20 seconds after starting the car will not blow it up.

What is the valet key for if not for this? Does the valet key actually have a rev limiter, or does it only keep them from accessing the glove box?
OP - If you are running E85, it is a safe assumption that you have an Accessport. Flash to the valet map next time and then don't worry. |
