Cut out airbox = like cold air intake = p0171?
Hey Guys,
I picked up an 02 WRX for cheap a few weeks ago. Car needed a few things and had a check engine light (I pulled the code, P0171). While in the process of looking for leaks and cleaning the MAF I pulled the air filter to find out the previous cut out the entire underside of air box, basically just leaving enough plastic to hold the filter and use the stock mounting points. My question - I know CAI's can cause this code if not tuned for it, would the bottom side of the air box being cut out give the same trouble as an aftermarket CAI? I have a couple other suspicious connections/hoses to replace but wondering if I should start sourcing a used COMPLETE air box. Thanks

Deleting the bottom side of the airbox and running the filter exposed will not cause that code.

Considering the vehicle is throwing a lean code, meaning more air then fuel and his air box has been modified to that extent, replacing the air box with a stock one and re checking system is definitely the best place to start with diagnostics regardless of whether or not it could cause the car to throw that code.

Either way, I dont like it hacked that way and used air box is about a dime a dozen.
