Nothing too crazy , its a general usage, up to 250 but under 200 would be great if thats possible

Save up a little more and spend $350-500 on a lens with a LOW f stop # (2.8 or 3.5) without the PLASTIC mounting rim that mounts to your camera.

I have heard good reviews abou this lense

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc..._6_APO_DG.html

I have the Nikon variant and the 70-300 Range is perfect for sports/ cars/ and general photography

If you are looking for some of the sharpest pictures you can take get a 50mm prime lense like the Nikon 50mm 1.8 for under $120, It will probably be one of your favorite lenses.

Also maybe look into the Nikon 55-200
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...G_ED_AF_S.html

My girlfriend has this lense and it is pretty dang good, It does lack vibration reduction though so for sports you may want to look into a lense that does offer VR but then the price jumps quite a bit. My advice is to look on KSL for some glass, post up what you find and I will let you know

^agreed with everything Tony said.

Also Nikon makes a 55-300 F/4.5-5.6 vr lens that is good for about $320.

I love my:Nikon 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S Nikkor Very good all-around lens for exterior or interior with a mounted flash. (Although its more than your $200 budget but worth spending more IMHO) I have this + a 50mm f/1.8 and I rarely find something I can't shoot with those two lenses.

And yes, my 50mm that I spent like $130 on is my favorite lens.

Nifty fifties are going to leave a sports shooter wanting though. That typically calls for a fast, long lens.

^Agreed. I need something with a bit longer range. It is a bad feeling when you feel like you were close enough to the action and load the photos to the comp only to find out your lens really couldn't handle the distance either.

At miller even my 300 feels is a bit short. I want the Nikon 200-400mm but it's $7000 so I'll probably hold off on that one for a bit.

Sigma also makes a 28-300 F/3.5-6.3 that is only $300, it's great to have one lens that will cover just about 90% of that range that you will need to shoot but you loose a bit of speed with that huge range of focal length, F6.3 at 300mm isn't that good but you will only have to carry one lens and you wont miss the action trying to change lenses in the middle of something because you had the wrong lens on.

I just went and picked up the D3100 kit from costco that comes with the 18-55 and the 55-200 VR lenses. I hope it gives me enough zoom and clarity for what I do with it. guess we'll find out soon enough haha just got it yesterday so I don't know anything about other lenses though.

Nikkor 1200-1700mm.....

They stopped making them but if you want zoom, you got it. I think it's about $90k though.
