Yeah that autogyro looks like fun. Almost all general aviation engines are horizontally opposed engines. It fits nicely under he cowl and since the crankshaft is in the cemter you can simply bolt a propeller right onto it instead of having to use a gearbox which adds weight. If you think about it, if you used a V or inline engien direct drive, the prop would be at the bottom of the cowl and you would have a really high cowling to clear the top of the engine, the boxer also keeps the center of gravity down lower. In homebuilts VWs were popular due to their simplicity, boxer design and the fact that they are air cooled. with 100+ knots of air rushing by air cooling is very effective. Alot of people use the older EA81 and EA82 engines although these are liquid cooled meaning you have to carry around a radiator and coolant and if you loose coolant your screwed. Finaly people are getting smarter and making conversion kits for EJ25s with superchargers to compensate for the less dense air at altitude, although the electronic fuel injection and all the goodies are the way to go, they are running them off stock computers meaning no dual ignition or redundancy. I think thats one of the beauties of homebuilt aircraft, that you can pretty much use any engine you like. Im trying to talk my buddy into an EJ20 on his RV. that would be mos excellent
