They want to me to change the design of that area, on the back side. It's doable, certainly, but it's a non-tool safe change they're talking about. I've sent in an inquiry regarding higher pressures or longer hold durations... hope to hear back on Monday.
Great way to start the long weekend

Adding feeder ribs, or some small local ribs to increase surface area? These are tricky because they also increase the local mass. Bosses in the middle of nowhere are usually a problem with shrink.

The thing is, the people have to: 1) Want an iPad 2) Want to put it in their car 3) Have a subaru 4) Have an impreza/wrx/STi 5) Have a model year 2005-2007 6) Have manual HVAC controls 7) Know of NASIOC or my docking solution So it's a pretty damn small slice. |

Spent a few hours this weekend hanging all the accessories off the Alpine CDA-9886. I said goodbye to the stock head unit and Sirius kit so had a big empty space to work with.
Oddly enough the XM tuner box shares a hole pattern with part of the dash so I used those screws for the bottom and a piece of steel bolted across the top using a couple of dash studs. I then sandwiched the digital adapter with DS tape and zip ties to finish that part. Not sure I will even use XM Radio, but it's there if I do. Closer view: For the Bluetooth adapter I bolted a piece of aluminum across the two lower mounting holes that used to secure the head unit cage. More DS tape and a wire tie finished that. I really like the Bluetooth input capability. Play any audio on your iPhone and it sounds great on the car's speakers. Also tried the incoming call audio mute and that works very well with Caller ID displayed on the Alpine. The audio ramps back up after the call. Since Justin is having problems with the mold, I'm going to take a shot at a temporary mounting for the iPad to cover that unsightly double-DIN hole in the dash. |

To do this you would need to remove your stock deck and cover the hole with a double DIN blockoff plate like this one: To this plate you would bolt a Wallee mounting disk: You would then put your iPad into a Wallee and rotate it into the mounting disk in either portrait or landscape mode: Pros: - Fairly cheap ($70 or so) - Very easy to install - Offers both orientations - Quick release - Retains stock hazard button location and vents - Can be reused elsewhere if Justin makes a manual control bezel later on Cons: - No hidden charging or audio out (this is a show stopper for me) - Looks bad when the iPad is removed - May have issues with mounting angle and clearance - Not nearly as OEM and professional looking |

BAM! Sampling #2.
Small venting issue still needs to be worked out, but that's nothing compared to what just got fixed. |

When it rains, it pours. Update from the cosmetics guys:
Cutting Die: Sampled Fiberboard: Ring and 2 pieces make the "i", the other crescents go behind the retainer tabs on the side pieces, so the iPad is all sandwiched nice and safe. |

So Justin, it looks like things are coming together nicely. If you get a chance can you give a rundown on what the supply chain logistics look like for this part? I'm interested in the technical details of how to get a part made in China as you're the only person I "know" who's done it on a small scale like this. If you would prefer to PM, that's cool.
Any updates on when you will actually have initial parts in hand? |

The last job I worked for I was a hardware designer and worked with many different fabrication houses. I still have all of that contact information. Molders, extruders, casters, rapid prototypers, finishers, 1-off shops, plastics gurus, sheet metal gurus, etc etc etc.
Once I had finished the basic design, I posted it up on here (and mp3car, and clubWRX, and iwsti), got a kinda ridiculous amount of positive feedback, so I decided to look into manufacturing it. Got in touch w/ my contacts, looked at some other molding houses, got quotes in, ball started rolling. Talked with the guys over at mp3car to potentially do the sales. Agreed in principle on how we'd proceed with the business end of things, and then I get to focus on what I do - the engineering. Getting a part made in China is no different than going to a shop down the road to rebuild your engine. Call them up/e-mail them, provide a basic drawing package, they give you an approximate quote. If you like what they have to say, you go ahead with them, submit a detailed drawing package and usually 50% down. They spend the next few weeks designing the mold (really freakin' cool, btw), send those drawings to you for approval, and the cutting begins. Just because it's in China is no different than if it's in the US. Shipping costs are more, and depending on what you're doing, you may need an importation license. You can learn more about that with a quick google search. No idea on the date and I'm starting to get gunshy on making my predictions 'cause they keep slipping one after the other. I should just change my sig to "about 6 weeks." |

Hey, quick question...
About how much force would it take to break those retaining tabs? I regularly launch items into my back seat via roll-ons in first gear.. I have a vent mounted I-phone holder on the drivers side defrost vent.. Managed to snap it's claws off on a bit of heavy footed acceleration.. I doubt a stock-ish car could generate that kinda force, but your target market might have a bit more "juice". |

OK, thanks for the info. I figured you had to have some sort of background in the industry to nail your suppliers so quickly.
I deal with China on the manufacturing plant side of things and it can be a hassle to get things done. The government requires that regulated engineering like civil/structural/electrical be done by one of their local design institutes. It adds another layer of complexity where communication lines are already thin. |

Here's a cross section of the tab. I beefed it up for this specific reason:
Units are in mm, so that's .114" thick. It's decent, but absolutely would not take all the force on its own. That's why we're using the iPad docking station. When/if the iPad were to fall out, the 30 pin connector in the dock actually serves as a pivot point. Since the tabs are 3.5" above that pivot, they can take a good deal of force before they yield. While I haven't done an FEA on it (wouldn't be too hard to... maybe tomorrow), I really find it extreeeemely unlikely you'll be able to shear them on a launch. The foam pieces on it also help... when they compress with the acceleration, that increases the impulse duration and lowers the overall peak force. |

Did your molder send pictures of the back side of the part? If so, can you post it up?

Not on this email. I'll wait for them to finalize the last little changes and post all the pics when it's done. This was just a major victory and I was kinda happy, so I felt like sharing.

Ah, didn't see you were planning on some foam in there. What material are you using? I could also forsee some hamfisted folks prying the ipad away while not quite clear of those tabs.
* Edit - not the foam material, the plastic. Last edited by BenGSX; 09-08-2010 at 04:57 PM. |

I'd be curious to see what we could do about wrapping a piece like this, or even adding stitching down the sides, embroidery, etc. It looks like an excellent candidate for some Alcantara from the photos
