nice review.

With the 5-speed manual – tweaked for fuel economy with a taller top gear – you notice the decreased low-end power immediately.
the thing that I'm concerned about is how this car, and cars similar, ie: mazda3 sky, ford focus, is the lack of power. fuel economy is great, but if I have 3 friends, and we're heading up to whistler, with our gears, is one of us going to have to get out and push if we're trying to go up one of the hills?

No, it's fine. You gotta remember, 99 RS engines weren't punching out much better numbers than this car: the way hp is measured changed around 2005 meaning older cars are a bit overrated by about 7-10 hp.

You right real good, Brendan.

I actually had a customer come in today to look at the new Impreza and he referred to your article saying it was the best review that he had read.

Nice job and thanks.

Nice write up but noted a single error.

I'm not sure using units of Communists is a correct temperature representation. Not a big fan of the new design and actually make me contemplate a full USDM WRX swap into my auto GC8.

Lulz indeed. Honestly, you should see the hate-mail I got for the 2008 WRX review. For which, I have to say, I was completely vindicated when the brought out the 265 the very next year.

It's all well and good that Subaru released a shiny new base model. And the review screamed honesty.

I look at any impartial car review as a warning. Warning you that either you are wasting your time or Warning you that you might have to deal with financing people to get the new shiny ride that you truely cannot live without.

This review was the former. I'm a car salesman's nightmare. After I testdrive a car I think I want, I dont talk to the salesman about options packages; I tell the salesman how much better a car I'm looking for. Better acceleration, better lowend torque, better handling. In past years I've walked into multiple dealerships and test driven everything not a pickup or minivan. I'm no mere testpilot. If I drive a car worth owning I find a way to own it. I generally walk out unimpressed. Plenty of cars fast in a straight line that cant handle a corner. Plenty of cars fun in the twisties that don't seem to see the point of accelerating in a straight line. A review like this saves me alot of time. Tells me not to bother looking at the basemodel because the new wrx/sti arent going to be based on the base impreza.

Its not that I'm a automobile-snob its just that alot of cars released domestically arent really worth my time. There is no reason a grocery-getting hatch cant have a decent power to weight ration and handle well in a corner.

Appreciate the heads up. Its interesting to know what subaru's up to. Keep up the great work.

If you are always looking for a better handling or faster car, you'll never be satisfied. You either need an unending bank account, or you make sacrifices to get a car close to what you need.

Plus, I'd never go into the dealer looking at a base Impreza expecting it to have more than enough power It's an economy car afterall.

Wow I've been away for super long time! Happy holidays everyone, and thanks for this fantastic review! I think the 2012 Impreza makes a great economic option for us! Although I do like the '08 tail lights...
