Default Oil on spark plug boots - WTF?

I just went to change my spark plugs. I pulled my first boot off, and it had oil around the inside of the top seal, and around the opening into the engine.

What is THAT, and what do I need to do to fix it? WRX swap?

Why, so I can pull all my suspension modifications then put em on the new car, plus have car payments? No way.

How about some real help here?

does the valvecover gasket set have the little o-rings for the spark plug bosses - common issues on other cars when those o-ring get old is seepage around the plug boot

My VC gaskets last 3 years. Your's perfect timing. They are relatively inexpensive from the dealer and easy to change DIY. I have a note on this board years ago on how to.

we (my shop for aircraft maintenance) uses Dow Corning O-ring grease when installing new orings and it substantially increases o-ring longevity in engine/hydraulic oil applications. It causes the o-rings to expand slightly while protecting them for a good while. we have actually been able to get 400 hrs out of o-rings that had been routinely being replaced @ every annual inspection (150-200 hrs) (doesnt work in fuel o-ring applications) I dont know how much it costs but its probably atleast $20-30 a tube. (which will last you the rest of your life) just a suggestion and future idea for anyone doing o-rings in high temp/corrosive environments.

Subaru specifically says no lubrication when changing VC gaskets. So i didn't use any. I guess it might get into crank?

That's kind of retarded, they live in a bath of hot oil. Might as well lube both sides. I just use motor oil.

So anyone have a blow-by-blow on pulling this off DIY? I'm a mechanical n00b, never seen a valve cover gasket.

Someone is confused about the difference between sealant and lubricant.

No nothing ok? You don't want the silicon based stuff into the engine oil, dude. No, it is not all bathed in oil, except when it becomes bad. If you really want to use something, use some natural air.
