2011 WRX Hatch elevated engine temperature
Long story short.
1) Sitting in traffic due to construction. 2) AC was on not blasting but enough to keep my wife daughter & me cool. 3) Noticed that the temp started to climb passed where it normally stays. It was a little pass the half way point. 4) Concerned that it would continue to climb I drove on the breakdown lane until reaching a point I could make a U turn & then proceeded to go to the dealer. 5) Iphone dead couldn't take a picture. 6) Once at the dealer car was back to operating temperature. 7) Subaru tech had me drive around could not duplicate issue. 8) Subaru tech inspected the cooling components, ie radiator, hoses, coolant fluid. No issues there. Conclusion: The Subaru tech could not find any issues, his guess was maybe heatsoaking was the culprit. My questions are: 1) Has anyone else experienced an issue? 2) I know that the 05 STI came with an intercooler sprayer. Did it actually lower the temp of the engine when pressed? 3) How difficult would it be to install one? I'm currently searching for a kit. PS Car is 100% stock besides the tints.

Just sitting in traffic not moving will make temps go up a bit, thats when the fans should kick on though when your not moving. When stopped the only airflow is from the fans as compared to when your moving. I would say its normal for it to do that, if your worried about it you could try adding some water wetter, royal purple coolant additive etc as they claim to lower coolant temp by up to 20 or so degrees.

My 2010 will sit a needle width past the half way point in traffic and high heat.

OP, please be more specific. how MUCH more past halfway did it go? the gauge isn't very sensitive either. it stays in the same position independent of whether i'm at 185F or 202F which is the regular fluctuation i see also, keep topics like this away from general and in technical as you will get better feedback. |

Intercooler sprayer sprays warm water thats been sitting in your trunk directly on the intercooler. Not gonna lower the temp of your engine while sitting in traffic.

it not normal..
if for some reason the there was a air bubble in the coolant system this would cause the over heating issue. open hood remove radiator cap start car observe the coolant level in reservoir dip thermometer in (use finger if you do not have one) add coolant if needed once the it gets hot to touch re-install radiator cap allow to warm until coolant fan kicks on ~204 F note the position of coolant needle on gauge. go drive around..watch for changes in needle position. 187-189 f normal operation temperatures |

To answer your ? It was between half and H closer to half but still up there when I noticed I immediately pulled onto the shoulder by the time I got to the dealer it had gone to normal. As I was driving it did begin to slowly go down it seemed like the cooling system just couldn't keep the ac running and the engine at normal temp. I do acknowledge that this was on a day that it was 104 with a heat index between 103 and 115. |

I was considering a cryo system it sprays a mixture of gasses freon. I had a kit on my boosted Civic just don't remember what it was called. I know it had a sprayer in front of the air intake and in front of the radiator. It would spray a mist that would be triggered by either a toggle switch next to my ebrake or when the temperature would exceed a certain numerical limit.

Your looking WAY too deep into this. A dealership is not going to do much for something they can't replicate. Just like my 2010 Forester. It spark knocks like a bitch here in the mountains, even with 89 octane. I took it to the Dealership, which is 1500ft lower in elevation, and they couldn't reproduce symptom. They just said to try different gas stations. I already have, but they still didn't do anything. Last edited by ki4syr; 07-25-2011 at 12:24 PM. |
