Nail on the head, Dom. I wouldn't have my job if I hadn't shown up and made the resource manager look me in the eyes. Put forth the effort. Prove yourself. Otherwise, stay home and open a new bag of Cheetos.

A properly written letter shouldn't make a difference in how it's delivered, I can understand you having a preference but ignoring the fact that the rest of the world uses email to communicate and calling it fake is a slight bit ignorant. you're entitled to your opinion of course, but mine is the opposite of yours. I prefer email to phone calls, mail and people dropping by. the joy of technology for me is that I can respond when I have time. People aren't constantly interrupting me allowing me more time to complete my tasks at hand. When I have a moment I can respond and collect my thoughts to provide a better answer to a question or have a minute or to to research something. It allows me the flexibility to complete my jobs on time |

Hopefully we're not hijacking this thread too far.
The difference lies in the fact that the professional world is built off of common courtesies, expectations, and standards that don't exist between your buddies. You don't care if your friend slouches, won't look you in the eyes, has a weak handshake, is late, or any other cue that employers look at. So what if you're a minute and thirty seconds late to your friend's house? If you're a minute and thirty seconds late to a job interview, you're likely be told "Don't call us, we'll call you." Even if you're not the kind of guy that upholds the standard acceptable practices for job interviewing on a daily basis, the fact that you care for that one day that it really matters means something. If you want to be taken seriously, take the job seriously. |

I think there is also a big difference between a three-sentence-long, badly-worded email sent from a phone, and a well-written email. The mail Dom quoted is definitely one of the former.
If that was a candidate who actually had his crap together, he'd have at least written something a bit more professional, attached a resume, and made a follow-up call or something. |

so because i only have 1 post i'm not allowed to have an opinion? wow.... SO glad I don't post much. Why should my opinion be kept to myself and yours should not? Isn't that this whole Freedom of Speech thing that is part of the constitution? If you don't like my opinion i'm ok with that, not everyone will. Telling me i'm not allowed to voice my opinion is a totally different argument.

I've got quite a few posts on here, and I support Gaelen's opinion... Though I do agree with Dom. Only taking 3 sentences to explain your experience and qualifications is definitely lazy and unprofessional. However, I see nothing wrong with sending an email.

What lemming said.
I've been in the tech industry for a while now (~4yrs), and frankly email is a fairly standard way of receiving and reviewing applicants these days. That said, I can promise you emails like the one posted by Dom do not get responses. Your email should be a professional letter, the same as you would send via more old fashioned means. It should still contain a resume, and should either act as a cover letter or come with a cover letter attached with the resume. Most of my coworkers do 99% of their work correspondence through email and other digital means these days, and reviewing applications are no exception. With email, just like with a letter, or a traditional hardcopy resume + cover letter - if your presentation is not professional, you cannot have much expectation for success. That said, the kid is 17, and probably hasn't even had that portion of Language Arts/English class. I remember those 'How to write and format a professional resume' days in High School. |

But when it's something you hear about in person, I would march the **** up there and make sure they got my resume and details in person. If you have two people with similar qualifications and one emailed you but the other actually showed up in person?... I know who would get hired. All about context. |

Definitely not yelling, I think it's actually an interesting and relevant conversion as our generation is one of crossover between the print age and the digital. this side conversation has somewhat hijacked your thread though.

my .02 depends on what kind of work you do, from Dom's stand point he interacts with people all day long it's part of his lifestyle so someone approaching him in person may seem like the right/professional thing to do. In other cases like a office setting where there is less interaction with people besides co-workers a e-mail or another form of electronic communication could be seen as a more acceptable approach.
I've had the same job for over six years now so the correct thing to do these days when applying for a position could have changed since then but I believe in making a appearance in person to sell why I should be hired over someone else. But hey I'm just a dumb flight engineer in the Army who picks his nose all day, flies over your houses way to low at night and shoots a mini gun so no professional talents required! |
