I have both for Canon. The AF is very slow on the f/1.8. The f/1.4 is USM, so it's faster (but not as fast as the 85 f/1.8 you have). The build is a bit better. Probably on par with that 85 f/1.8. The look (DOF) between f/1.8 to f/1.4 isn't huge, but it's noticeable given the right conditions. The main reason I got the 1.4 is because my 1.8 broke in half at a wedding reception! I should post some photos of the carnage sometime.

I would say it is most definitely better in every way (except price). I don't have any experience with the Sigma, but they seem to be rather hit or miss on the quality control. Seems like a lot more variation lens to lens from what I've noticed.

Yeah. I think anyone who's used a 1.8 for any amount of time has broken one.
The Sigma definitely has a big variance. It just too bad. When its good its really good. I tried 5 before I said **** it and bought the 50L. A couple of my friends have good copies and they would give my 50L a run for its money in almost every way besides max aperture. Btw Ben- 5Diii is freaking amazing for wedding work. I am thoroughly impressed and am really glad I sold my 5Dii last week and pulled the trigger on the second 5Diii. |

The 50 L is just so expensive. I'm not really worried about breaking my 1.8. I just use it so much that I was just curious if the 1.4 was a worth while upgrade down the road. A quality zoom is on my list first. I can't wait to have a red ring!!

The Sigma 50/1.4 is insanely nice and better than both of the home brand copies which is rare. I had one for Nikon and I want one on the Canon end. I have the 50/1.4 on Canon and I am not impressed in comparison with the Sigma. I'll probably sell my Canon copy to get the Sigma.

I think the 50 f/1.4 may be worth it for you, but probably not the 50L. Either of these will have much smoother bokeh than the 50 f/1.8. I would definitely put a quality zoom at the top of your list though.
Right now I have two 5D's, two 7D's, and one 5D2. I am having a hard time justifying if the 5D3 would really make my photos better or make me more money. Selling all my bodies and buying four 5D3's would cost me $6-7k. I really don't think that's worth the cost. The cheapest route would probably be two 5D's and two 5D3's. That would probably cost me $2-3k out of pocket. But then I'd have some EF-S lenses that would be useless, and upgrading them to proper L lenses would be more money out of pocket. Maybe I could sell one 7D and one 5D and get a 5D3. That would probably cost me a grand and I'd get to see what all the hype is about. I'll have to think about it some more. It really does look nice, but I don't know if it puts more money in my pocket... |

How is the 6D supposed to be? It seems like its very close to the 5DII as far as specs.

The 6D is a current generation 2nd and a half tier camera. The 6D has more features that are "gimmicky" (for a lack of better term) The 5Dii has its own advantages like 1/8000 max shutter and 1/200 flash sync. The few tests Ive seen show that the 6D does have a better AF system. I havent been following the 6D much because Ive had no interest in it, since my plans are set on 3 5Diiis and a 7D. |

Well...when someone comes on saying they "are going to have many contributions soon" and pimps their website of spotter pics calling themselves an automotive photographer...it seemed relevant. I don't even call myself that...

Oh me too trust me. I guess it is just an annoyance of mine when people make an "entrance" into a thread like this without actually contributing anything and already start pushing their urls.

His introduction annoyed me as well. As if we're supposed to be hyped up that he's going to start posting in the thread, someone we've never heard of before.

Robb - I really dig the way you compose with color and your technical mastery is definitely something to work towards. Next time I'm visiting family over in Woodstock I should drop you a line! I'll bring my flashlights! |

I feel like if I tried to replicate that shot with my t2i and 50mm 1.8, it would be no where near as crisp as this and the car would not be as sharp/focused, especially at a distance like that. I know the 1.8 is known for focusing issues, but I'm really starting to consider upgrading to the 1.4 or (like someone else mentioned) the sigma 1.4. |
