Have a Nice Day? Midpipe install... NE1 get their midpipe from SPD?? Help

I noticed today while crusing that my cabin area seems to be warmer than usual. I then developed a head ache. I'm wondering if my exhaust is leaking since my install. I don't have electicity in my garage so I can't look at it until tomorrow after work. Has NE1 got their midpipe from SPD tunning? I noticed that the piping actually stick out below the bolt eyes on the midpipe. This then made it unable to bolt the two pieces (cat & mid) flush, but it was snug and wouldn't tighten any more. This isn't the way it is supposed to be is it? The bolt hole area's on the cat and mid should touch and not have space in between. Does this mean that the midpipe excess is supposed to slide inside the back of the cat?? I'm confused and don't need to be high off exhaust as I drive. I'm taking a long trip this weekend and I don't want to pass out or something on the way. I e-mailed Mike Shields at SPD tunning, but I haven't heard back from him yet. Any pro out there that can help would be great.

Thanks in advance

I'm assuming you are talking about the Stromung midpipe? I bought my Stromung from SPD. The flanges at the midpipe and the exhaust pipe should NOT be flush. The midpipe has a kind of reversed flare and fits snugly into the exhaust pipe. If you noticed, the flange bolts have springs on them and the bolts are stepped bolt that will only tighten to a certain point to prevent you from getting the connection to tight. The pipes are really held together by the spring tension when the bolt is tight. How many miles were on your car when you put the midpipe on? I have heard there is a donut type gasket at the flange, but I didn't notice one. I put my mid-pipe on at 2000 miles though. Anyway, if you have an exhaust leak at this location you should be able to hear it pretty easily if it's a significant leak.

Good luck,

Wink

Alright. Then if there isn't an exhaust leak, then why is there excess heat in the cabin of my car and a smell. Is it because the midpipe is stainless steel and it has some coating that stinks when it is new.
My car has 14,000 miles on it and I'm sure it is the strougm mid from SPD and the STi muffler unit. I re-used the gasket between the muffler and mid. no gasket between the cat and mid. Any silicon type gaskey oozze I could used to help seal it?
I'm going to look at it tonight so let me know please.

What is the smell that's got me worried?

thanks... [email protected]

Omahasubaru'

I hope you and solomrus determined that everything is OK on your car. When I put on my new Stromung (stainless dual tip muffler and midpipe) I too had a little smoke and odor coming off the fresh metal for a few days. I assume that the metal has oils on it from the manufacturing process or to protect it while it sits in shipping boxes. Anyway, from what I've heard this is fairly common with new exhaust systems.

Its common on a lot of things that are being shipped new. Cosmoline is like petroleum jelly. They us the stuff to protect metal during shipping. Smells something awful on muffler and midpipe as it burns away. The smell does go away after a little while. My stromung reeked just terrible for about a week after I first got it.

Thumbs up

Everything checked out ok. I guess I was just a little paranoid. He too stated that it was probablly new pipe burning smell. No big deal!

Thanks for the help SolomonRS and those too who put in their $0.02!

I have some pics that only need scanned and I'll post some pics of my STi exhaust, also i'm putting on rear bumper spats tonight so I might wait until I have them on to post pics. They won't be painted to match right away.

Thumbs up

never a problem. i am not the most knowledgeable about these cars(yet), but as far as automobilia in general goes, an exhaust pipe is an exhaust pipe.

unless, of course, it is the down pipe for a turbo, then it is a lot more than just an exhaust pipe...

heh-heh, sorry everyone, just dreaming a bit.

have a good weekend everyone!
