a 27.6" tire will not even fit the car without forester struts.

Yep, like I figured. Didn't realize the stock tires were that big though. Maybe I was thinking of the stock size on the GD STis, 225/45-17. I'll run into the same problem though, once I get the '06, but I'm gonna be going after some gravel spec brakes, then I can fit my 15" Braids. They'll still be overly large in the tire size (215/70-15), but it'll have to do for a bit. At least till its time for some replacements.

I was going through some old pics today and came across these pics of a dry river-bed run years ago. '87 XT-Turbo with stock air-ride, 5-speed with locking diff. Stock, but dirty.
How about snowy? I'm looking forward to the day my WRX can join this thread. Thank you all for the inspiration. |

The XT wasn't fast by WRX standards, but it handled like no other. They're only 2,400lbs-ish with 115hp so it'd scoot, but the Full Time 4WD is a different beast, and the weight distribution was near 50/50. It would twist in a powerslide from a center of gravity right between the front seats. It just pivots like a tank. By the time that car went on to its next life, its air suspension was completely shot and it rested on the bump-stops. Serious problem on washboard dirt roads, but freaking amazing on smooth pavement. Oh, and the shifter was never more than a couple of inches away from the wheel and all the controls were at your fingertips. It fits like a Kayak. Mine even had the digital dash (some of which actually worked at first). Such a fun car to drive; if you get a chance to try one, do it.

Here's a couple more, for being a good audience.
The Audi didn't make it out of the river-bed under it's own power. He cracked his aluminum radiator on a rock and I had to tow him to town. These are from the same ski trip to Mammoth and Mono as the two above. |

does anyone know if you can fit 225/75/r15's on a 98 outback without any mods or with forester suspension? or any links to a car with them. thanks

You should be able to fit those as your spring perches are higher than imprezas and foresters. Double check the clearance though for sure. They will rub like hell though so you might want to get a lift. You can make a cheap 2 inch strut lift if you have some HDPE and some tools. While you're at it get some low offset wheels to help with lateral tire clearance. So to make a long story short, without modification you might run into some issues. 215/75/15 should fit no issues and general grabbers Are a popular choice

I would lift it first honestly. Sure it'll look funny for a little bit but when I got my 27s I wanted to go bigger instantly. You won't have to worry about tire clearance issues either. 235/75/15 LTs are the business

I just finished going through this entire thread and it really makes me want to get going on finishing up mine.
Here's a before and after of my 2005 Outback Sedan 3.0R. Has 1" Subtle Solutions lift spacers. Still have the stock 225/55/17's on it (Big O Euro's were on it when I bought it). I'm going to go with the Grabber AT2's in a 215/65/16 but I don't have any clue which 16" wheels to run. I want something like you might see on any other lifted 4wd vehicle (Cragar's or Black Rock's or Mickey's and etc.) just to be different but nothing seems to be in a 5x100 bolt pattern. |

yours is H-6 3.0, is it automatic? If so Auto is tits off road, with the torque and power of the 3.0, plus an auto's slipping clutches , you should be able to do pretty well "for a car" but such a nice and new rig, body damage is inevitable, once you start pushing and playing hard nice looking OB sedan!! |

Thanks! Yeah, it's a 3.0. I live in Colorado and will start out lightly first just to see what capabilities it has. Then once I'm more comfortable with it I'll start hitting some of the harder trails. I just need to find a group to go out with. I don't want to run them alone. Bad joo joo is certain to happen if I do.
I was hoping to maybe get 1 more inch of lift out of it so that I could run a slightly larger tire. But as it is now the tires have moved too close to the body for any further lifting and the 215/65/16's are gonna be about it. By the way, we'd love to see some video of your car in action. It's pretty cool to see a car going where only the bigger 4wd's go. |

Yeah, it'd be the trailing arms for the rear tires. Check out Gorilla Offroad, Jack(Skemcin on DI.com) has some adjustable trailing arms for most MYs.

This thread has me thinking about trading my '08 OBS for an older Forester or Outback to lift and have fun with...

I'm not too sure what will fix that in his car, I have only seen a couple other lifted 3rd gen outbacks. . . . My knowledge on those is limited. @ spshultz: How did you lift your OB? strut top spacers, king springs? |
