I live in DC, Commute is crap, would never drive a M/T in this area, I'm sure the 5 speed is "more fun" to drive, but as a sensible adult there are far more pressing things on my priority list.

Go for the cvt, you will prob be iffy about the way it drives initially, but you might not regret it so much in the long run

Idk if it has been covered in this thread but how much would you be "willing" to pay for a car per month (insurance included)... 400? 500? I only ask because of you reference to pay..

It's the only way to justify buying new. Another thing to consider is peace of mind. I know there will be those who say a new car can break down just as easy as a used but the odds are in your favor that's not going to happen. I like knowing my car is going to get me to my job and my job pays for everything.
I also like to stay on top of the maint and know everything that has happened to the vehicle as most aren't concerned because they will buy another car in a few years. Just my thoughts on this matter.
Totally agree. When you buy used, you are buying someone else's problems. And buying a low mileage used car can be more dangerous than buying one with 125k miles on it; a low mileage car that has been beat to hell may not show it, but shows it much earlier in the life of the vehicle.

I have driven the CVT and own a 5MT. Personally I have been driving stick for 8 years now and would never go back to an auto or a CVT but the CVT isn't bad at all. I could see how people would get annoyed with the droning noise from the engine but its really not that bad and is responsive.

Sounds doable, I still say get the CVT. I have a 12' Limited, only gripes is the MPGs but I wouldn't trade this car for a FWD alternative simply for the gas mileage (I should have bought the 5 door though! lol).

First Subaru too, love this car. The CVT is a different feel, but the way people lambast about it in a car like this is just fluff Imo.

First post - hi all. Can't start a thread unless I have 3 responses to previous posts. This thread seems most pertinent to my question.

I am helping a friend shop for a new car. After driving a number of alternatives, my friend has pretty much landed on a 2013 or 2014 Impreza. Here is the problem...she would like leather, the moonroof - and the manual 5 speed transmission.

My friend is not in a hurry, and she is willing to wait for her car to be built and shipped. Obviously, as evidenced by this thread discussing 5 speed vs. CVT, Subaru builds a 5 speed manual for the Impreza.

However, if we are seeing the information on the Subaru America website correctly, and a person wants leather seats and a moonroof, the transmission choice is limited to CVT? Can this possibly be correct? If she chooses to have an Impreza Wagon built to order, and if Subaru makes a 5 speed for the Impreza, why would she not be able to get the leather, moonroof, 5 speed combo. Is there any work around on this? Suggestions?

Thanks,
Gary

Hey Gary,

Well the only option I can see is to order a Sport premium and some dealerships will have Custom upholstery shops put leather in for you. It won't be the exact same as a limited, only the seats will be leather and nothing else. It would come with some of the nice luxury amenities as a limited would have either. This is if you just wanted the leather seat. If you wanted all the limited package feature and a manual, that isn't going to happen.

Your research is correct. I would have preferred a Limited with a stick, too. But for me, the stick was the prerequisite, so I had to downgrade to a Sport Premium and forego the leather and sunroof.

Many brands do this kind of thing, and it pisses me off. I think you'll find a similar situation with the new Mazda3--as soon as you spec the top model, the option to get it with a stick goes away. You can't get a Mazda3 with the more powerful 2.5L engine and a stick. You can only get the stick with the 2.0L engine.

If she wants all the fancy goodies and a stick in a wagon, then she needs to start looking at a WRX, VW Sportwagon, Audi A3 (does that still come in a hatch?), MINI, and the like. Most manufacturers think that if you want all the fancy goodies, then you're too lazy to shift for yourself. I struggle with this issue myself.

A dealer told me they could factory order a 5MT with leather for me at invoice. I didn't have time for this, so I took a 5MT premium with cloth.

I'm surprised to hear that's even possible from the factory. If you go onto the Subaru website and "build your own" configuration, you'll see that leather and 5MT are mutually exclusive. As soon as you say that you want to build a "2.0i Sport Limited" or "2.0i Limited", the only transmission choice is the CVT. The "2.0i", "2.0i Premium", and "2.0i Sport Premium" allow you to choose between the Manual or CVT transmissions.

I know it's not possible from the website. I haven't placed such an order, it's just what the dealer told me he could do. He did mention a delay of several months.

You could buy used or new factory leather seat covers, and a nice wheel wrap and shift knob wrap and save a ton and have the trans you want.

And, the factory does make Limited's with the manual transmission they just don't give the option to buy one in the American market. Other markets can buy them.

They could buy one in another country, keep it in a warehouse for 25 years, and then import it. Problem Solved!

Maybe even get a XV from Europe with the diesel engine.

There are many car configurations I would love that are available in Europe and that don't make it to the US. Many of them are diesel wagons with manual transmissions.

Whats your fascination with the 6mt? It is the same with 3 overdrive rather than 2. The acceleration gears are the same so it doesn't even have better gearing.

A taller cruising gear would be great.
