rattling engine noise
Just noticed on my way to work this morning, a rattling noise, almost like my flywheel is wobbly and grinding up against something. The car does not drive any different, and feels healthy. It's not noticeable at idle, but if I put the car under some load, say 3rd gear at 2500, then hit the gas, I can hear it pretty well. The noise also happens at deceleration, hitting the brakes does nothing, the sound still persists. I also tried cranking my wheels and driving in circles both directions to see if it was something with the steering, but that all worked fine.
When I got to work, I looked in the engine bay, and didn't see anything off hand. I'm going to put it up on the ramps tonight and take a look, but was hoping you guys could give me some places to start. My car has 105k on it now and still has the original clutch, so I'm pretty easy on the car, but maybe the throwout bearing is dead or something else in the tranny? |

Maybe check for a broken crank pulley ot loose pulley? Just had that happen in my brother's Infiniti G20. Awful rattling. And the rubber ring on the pulley wore out and was rattling.

I'll check those tonight. I'd like to get the car in somewhere tomorrow if I can't figure it out, called subaru superstore but they are booked tomorrow, anyone got any suggestions on where I could get it looked at if I can't figure it out? I don't want to drive all the way to goodspeed, so any other good shops that have good mechanics will do.

Could it be detonation?

check your axles, I thought I had a bad clutch and it turned out to be an axle. could have a torn boot and its just running dry in there.

You called it yman, drivers side torn inner cv boot. looks like everyone suggests just replacing the axle. calling around for pricing now unless its uber easy to replace an axle?

You can replace it yourself, but shops usually only charge an hour of labor for them since they are fairly easy to replace if you have the tools. |

You should let me know what kind of pricing you find because I had the same issue and thanks to yman again, I found my inner boot torn also... Passenger side though.

Subaru wants to charge 385.00 and will give a 45 dollar core charge if the axle is rebuildable. Napa wants to change 109 for the axle, and rougly 202 +tax for the replacement. Autozone charges 69.00 for the axle, but the Subaru guy at the dealership told me not to use anything other then a genuine subaru axle, so still shopping around.

Phoenix rack and axle can probably rebuild it, give them a call:

I would personally do the autozone or napa one and just replace it myself.

I ended up going to the Subaru Superstore in Chandler since they could get me in today, spoke with the service manager Gil and he gave me a discount. In the end I ended up paying 302 out the door and they had me in and out in a little over an hour.
I drove the car home and the majority of the noise is gone, although I still hear a rattling... ugh. I can reproduce the noise now when the car is in neutral and I rev up the engine, so I'm still thinking something in the tranny. Going to climb back underneath tonight and do another inspection =( |

Found a loose front o2 sensor bracket, got it all tightened up, but still no love, still get the whining from somewhere. Doesn't sound like it is any of the belts. What all is being rev'd when the car's in neutral that could be making the noise, pulleys and something in the tranny right?

definitely not coming from the radio, I probably shouldn't have said whining above, its more of a rattle or a clank. I'm thinking that it's either a timing belt tensioner, or something in the tranny. Going to take it down tomorrow and have the dealership diagnose.

yeah, having a hard time diagnosing. I think I'm going to rip all the belts out tomorrow just to verify its not any of the pulleys in the engine bay. If it's not a pully, should I just take this back down to the dealership and have them diagnose, or does anyone know somewhere with a scooby mechanic that knows their stuff?

No my point is if the radio works. Turn it up a tad bit more. If you start chasing sounds. Your going to be locked up in a white padded room.

In many ways twinscroll is right, if you chase every noise the car makes you will go crazy, cant hurt to check tho, probably a stupid question, but could it be an interior piece rattling, ive **** bricks a few times thinking my car was making nasty sounds only to find it was a stupid interior panel

Definetly something mechanical though, sounds serious or I probably wouldn't care so much, I'll post more after its diagnosed

I got a video of the noise, listen right at 5 seconds when I start to decelerate, you can hear the rattling. The noise only happens after the engine is warm.

Check the heat shield on the up pipe. It is extremely common to have them break and rattle. They are only held on by a couple of spot welds and when they crack, the shield will move around a bit and rattle. There are a ton of threads on it.
