Default 2012+ Impreza 2.0 Paint Issue (Satin White Pearl Owners 5dr Wagon)

Hi Guys

This question is really for those with the SWP (Satin White Pearl) finish. Has anyone noticed that the front bumper and the rear bumper paint color changes over time and doesnt match the white pearl color of the rest of the body/hood??

I've noticed that my front bumper and rear have changed colors to almost a yellowish tinge. I am rather pissed that the car is essentially two toned.

I wash my car regularly and wax it about every 2 weeks. So what the hecks gives??

I am about to take it in and have them correct the issue but not too certain if this is covered in the bumper to bumper warranty (i assume it does since its the paint).

Anyways, i wanted to see if other can chime in on their SWP imprezas.

I will post pics once I get a chance to take good pics to point out what I am talking about.

its pretty apparently especially when I look at the points where the front bumper meets the front side quarter panels.

they should respray it under warranty if not contact SOA directly and then they will cover it, maybe the car was built on a friday, it happens.

sounds like a plan, was just curious if others SWP had the same issue. I've read that people said the paint was crap (i.e. easy paint chipping etc). i'll take it in and bring it up when I take in my oil change soon (about 300 miles left before next oil change).

For what it's worth (not much), I have a friend with a white 2003 Honda Accord that has the exact same problem.

funny thing is, i had a 2000 white accord coupe (probably the same body style) at least it should be if i recall my honda correctly (could be wrong) but not a problem, the shine on the paint went away over time but the colors were the same, which is why i thought it was strange with my impreza, especially since it was brand new.

i can definitely tell the quality of materials is different from subaru and honda. personally i think honda did better work. the seats, and now paint of my impreza have given me issues (seat had lumpiness in the cushioning) and now the paint discoloration (car is parked in garage or indoor parking structure, rarely outside) which bothers me even more about the issue.

ill have them repaint it if needed....ideally i rather have a new factory bumper but fat chance of that happening, likely a repaint if anything.

If you have access to a GOOD body shop you might go in and show them what is going on and see if they can educate you as to what might be going on. That way you can tell the dealer what is causing the issue. You may even get the guys that help you out the dealers business.
Just a thought.

yea ill call and ask a body shop i know if that is normal or common. i just dont think its a normal thing, why should it change. no one else with a SWP has this issue???

Mine is the white as well. I am afraid to go look at it in the sunlight now. I'll look and report back. It may have something to do with painting over plastic? Just pulled that one out of my azz...

yea i thought its because of the plastic too, but i dont see why since all bumpers are made of the same and ive never seen such variation on new cars.

let me know if you dont mind checking Paul. Thanks!

I have an "13 SWP and just washed and waxed it and I do notice a SLIGHT yellowishness on my bumpers compared to the body. Its not too noticeable but there is a difference. I was just chalking it up to being different due to the plastic. Now I am going to play closer attention to it though!

Bumpers are always painted in a different shop then the rest of the body. These new pearl whites are very hard to match up on plastic bumpers, compared to the metal body. You see silver cars with the same problem. It's very hard to match silver if you get in an accident.

It's nearly impossible to match paint from a plastic piece to a metal or aluminum piece. Not only that, but the plastic pieces' paint will fade and take corrosion faster. Its normal. Unless its ridiculously off hue.

Actually, this is kinda funny that i found this thread (i got into a fender bender this morning and looking for price quotes ppl got on SWP). I bought a used DP locally and notcied his 2013 wrx is slightly yellow. I at first thought that maybe he had a different color completely since I had my car right next to him to compare. Maybe this is a 2013 thing?

To those of you who have the SWP roof spoiler for hatchbacks: Do you notice the same yellowish color on the spoiler?

RE: Satin White Pearl [Finish]
Bought 2013 Impreza wagon within two weeks after washing the vehicle noticed several spots on the hood, roof & side of the car. Thinking about the possibility tried taking it out however it didn't come out. Rust in the pearl flake?

forgot to update...i took my car in and got them to repaint the front bumper and now it matches better. initially the corporate rep (just happen to make a visit) was trying to show me how all the new cars on the lot in swp also had the discoloration or uneven paint match "thus" its normal. i told him ive had several white cars and none has ever done this. just because all the cars have the same issue (although they were as off as mines) doesnt mean there isnt an issue. He said he would address it with corporate but possibly its due to paint on metal (body) adheres differently to plastic (bumper). anyways he said he would do it as a one time courtesy and had it repainted.

its definitely better than having a yellowish bumper, it hasnt discolored since so i think its really a manufacturing paint issue or paint process issue.

i have and installed the rear spoiler myself and have not noticed any paint issue with that. the spoiler is actually metal so i dont see why it should.

I worked in autobody back in the 90's. pearl white is a very tough color to match and if the. bumper was painted seperate from the car, it wont really *match* 100%. Remember the Cadillac Allante? It had a gorgeous white pearl paint available. There was also a set of ppg videos and books about matching Cadillac Allante pearl white. Its not that the plastics and the adherence cause the difference, its that the paint has to be sprayed and layered the same for a good match. Adhesion promoters are used on the plastic parts, but the color difference is likely from thin, poorly matched factory paint. just my 2¢.
