Default MINI set to launch 60mpg Cooper One D

Quote:
The recently launched Honda Insight and third-generation Toyota Prius have stolen most of the green spotlight here in the U.S., but the European market is about to get a crack at an equally impressive high-mileage machine.

Set to hit the European market later this year, the MINI Cooper One D promise hybrid-like fuel mileage without the added cost and weight associated with a hybrid system. Joining the MINI One as one of the marque’s most modestly priced models, the diesel-powered MINI One D promises to return the equivalent of 60 mpg.

While most of that fuel sipping can be attributed to the car’s BMW-sourced 90 horsepower diesel engine, MINI engineers also include a few other bits of green tech. The One D will employ a regenerative braking system to help recoup some energy for accessory power and a start-stop system will ensure no fuel is wasted while the vehicle is at a stop.

Performance is also decent for a green machine with the sprint from 0-60 taking 11.5 seconds – not too far off from current hybrids. And, thanks to the MINI badge, the One D should feel right at home on the twisty bits.

There are no current plans to bring the MINI One D to the States, but with U.S. diesel sales starting to take off, and Americanized version might not be too far off.

Default It’s official: Mini Cooper D not coming to the U.S.

Quote:
After months of haggling, it’s becoming clearer that the R56 MINI Cooper D may never set their wheels on US soil. The reason is that the costs for converting the European Diesel engine to US specifications are too large for a three- or four-year production run. Even if MINI USA charged 10%-15% more, they’d never make any money. And if MINI USA priced the car at 40%-50% more to pay for the re-engineering required, few would buy them at today’s moderately low fuel prices. However, plans for the R60 based Cooper S D to be available in the US are still up in the air so stay tune as we’ll have more updates in the coming weeks.

And all those cars are from only 2 companies.. and both of them are Europeans.

If just a fraction of all the internet forum fanboys that have been pleading for diesels actually went out and bought one, then I think you'd see many more car makers pushing to get their diesels to the US. But the way it is now, most Americans rather go with gasoline.

I don't know why manufactures are so reluctant to sell diesels here. Jeep at a limited run of diesel Grand Cherokees and Liberties (IIRC, 5000 units each) and they sold out in a matter of months.

I realize that.. if that 335d engine could possibly work in the Mini, that would be one CRAZY ride... 425 lb-ft of torque in a sub-3000 lb car.

diesels are more efficient for mpg. . .

On a side note, a press release from Hummer's new owner said that the H2 & H3 will be offered with diesel powerplants & 6 speeds.

Umm, Torque Steer????You'd touch the throttle, and instantly, your forearms would break and you'd be face to face with a cow or rather upset man drinking his starbucks.

The MINI is already accused of being grossly overpriced. The D would ultimately fail in the US and lose money for BMW/MINI. The Jetta TDI is big enough to be a really practical vehicle and gets poor gas mileage (under 30mpg) w/ the base engine. The MINI, w/ the base engine, gets near 40 highway. At this point, you really start getting into diminishing returns.

There is no free lunch! So you instead get the added cost and weight of diesel components.
