Default leaking head gasket?

I took my 2002 impreza outback tot he dealer because of a very strong gas smell in the cabin, anfd they say I have to pay $2500 for a leaky head gasket! No over heating problems, coolant level problems, or leaking coolant on the floor. Do I have reason to doubt the dealer?

The 02's are notorious for this, I am sorry to agree with the dealership. The gas smell is a very strong sign unfortunately

There is also a factory recall TSB out there. That means free replacement. Look into it...

it is not possible for a leaking head gasket to cause a gas smell in the cabin. refer to your other thread for guidance on the fuel leak smell.
