Default Help me build a beastly wagon...

Hey all-

Looking to do a 2007 or older WRX version of mightycarmods gramps or super gramps legacy/outback build.

Basically a poor man's AWD CTS-V.

I am tempted to use my 2000 H6 3.0 OBW but figure it would be easier with the more sporty Impreza platform and a factory turbocharged engine??? I also would like to learn with this platform and build a factory five 818 from the vehicle when my kids are old enough to participate (about 8 years from now)

I would like to also add a hitch to pull a small utility trailer for the rare occasion I need to haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood.

Serious. Looking to build a year round 11sec daily driver to replace my winter beater OBW I drive more than I should and the Corvette Z06 that sits more than it should with 3 kids now.

Thanks,
Andrew

wrx wagon + ej207 = 11sec daily driver.

you CAN squeeze a H6 into an impreza, been done dozens of times. but if you have 3 kids you'll need bigger.

a built Turbo H6 in a OBW running a Haltech would be a badass sleeper that would smoke your Z06 anyday of the week.

use an EZ30R or a EG33. send it to Outfront Motorsport for closed decking.

Default Help me build a beastly wagon...

I have been studying the mighty car mods build- I am getting a little lost with all of the nomenclature of the parts for the transmission and rear end - rb180? GB/GT? Impreza? Sometimes their accent is hard to decipher.

Is closed decking like o ringing the block? Do I already have an ez30r?

Will the wrx front control arms bolt on to my obw? I am pretty sure the quick ratio rack will as I was already planning that soon and I think gramps got one too

I def do not want the 2.0 engine unless it's some sort of sequential turbo setup- I am too accustomed to the low end torque of my v8 and the 3.0 I currently have...

Thanks for your help!!

the EZ30R was not an actual engine designation. its what enthusiasts use to determine the two EZ30's.

the EZ30D has, 1 exhaust port per head, no cam timing adjustment, and metal intake.

the EZ30R is 3 exhaust ports per head, AVCS intake/AVLS exhaust cam adjustment, and a plastic intake.

i think 2004 was the year they switched.

closed deck is a term used to signify reinforcement of the deck plate that meets the head. also known as CSS (cylinder support system)

these are EJ25's... but you can see the difference in the deck support. o-rings are are sealing, not for cylinder support. you could probably do both if youre going balls deep.

the EG33 is a 6cyl version of the EJ22 and if found in the SVX. properly built, its one of the fiercest motors subaru ever made.

i dont know about fitment for the OBW, but the BP chassis legacy (03-09 wagon) is what super gramps is if u just want to find one if those.

Thanks for your info- I take it finding a eg33 would be pretty tough? Seems like jdm Honda engines at less than 50k they are giving away...

I am really thinking about boosting this ez30d and see how long it lasts as I figure out the drivetrain- then find a 3.0z or 3.3. I will look into halltech- I am more familiar with mega/microsquirt on ls swaps.

Wasn't there a 3.0 turbo liberty? I will call outfront and get a quote for CSS

there might have been a 3.0 turbo liberty in aus i dunno, but there was no 3.0 turbo legacy in the usdm.

EG33's are not that hard to find but are more expensive to build due to the parts being harder to get (but they are out there)

they had legacy wagons (spec b) in the US that had a 6speed but came with an EJ255. that would be a good platform to start with as you would only have to worry about swapping the motor and wiring the car. the rest of the drivetrain is already in place.

if you find one in decent condition, you can sell off the EJ255 to recoup some co$t. or find one with a blown motor and save on the purchase price.

This car already has the rb180 transmission and heavy duty/axles, they used in the gramps projects?

There were no 3.0 turbos from the factory in any country. There were no Spec B wagons sold in North America. Spec Bs and STIs have the R180 diff.

The US never got a Legacy turbo wagon with a 6MT.

Are you talking about the used ones that are imported through the 15 year rule?

they are LHD so i pretty sure they were not imported. also it hasnt been 15 years yet for the spec-b. the legacy wagon continued in canada for 2 more years (07&08) than the usa.

now i gotta go digging again lol... im pretty sure i have seen spec-b wagons up here. there was only like 230ish made.

I was having trouble finding one for sale- this could explain it...

Why not just use the TriBeCa/legacy sedan 3.6 instead of one of these 3.0r? Motors
